I would love any of these people who think that anti-AI is a luxury belief to explain to me why they think the wealthiest Americans are almost universally pro-AI. If it were such a luxury belief, we'd expect to see it among the people who can most afford to hold luxury beliefs!

dame@dame.is

my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

If you are advocating for more AI use, you are advocating for more money in the pockets of deranged fascists like Elon Musk and Peter Theil, which makes you a useful idiot for them no matter how much you hate them.

Maximilien Jokespierre@hellsite-refugee.bsky.social

In my opinion pro-AI people spend too much time arguing about use cases and too little contemplating how much wealth and power they’re funneling to a handful of weird little freaks right after the Chudification of a bunch of other liberal leaning weird little freaks.

documentary is secretly about how if you rope Nathan Fielder into a contract he doesn't like he will spend essentially infinite effort getting out of it

It is wild the number of people in the replies who justify this by pointing to the existence of another grocery store nearby, as though the people who live in this area shouldn't be allowed to have a choice of multiple grocery stores to shop at.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

the UK is just cooked. seems like every boomer there has taken up NIMBY as their retirement hobby because god forbid people have access to affordable groceries

There's an anecdote in Jazmine Ulloa's recent book about how Chinese people would enter through El Paso to get around the Chinese Exclusion Act, because as long as they could say "Yo soy Mexicano" it was often enough to fool the border guards.

LOWρUFO 🇺🇦🇵🇸🌍@lowrhoufo.bsky.social

It used to be basically impossible to prove where someone was born, where they lived or for how long. The amount of paperwork involved was just not cost effective. The only things recognizable as borders pre-20th century involved enormous amounts of expensive, arbitrary manpower to enforce

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

I'm screenshotting this because I do not want to engage with Will, but I have never before today said anything negative about Will, and had even defended him in the past. But his behavior over the past 24 hours has been so cruel that it will be a long time before I say a kind word about him again.

Update: encountered someone who claimed to have gone through an experience a lot like my family's, who was so eager to punch left that they insisted that what had happened to them was, in fact, just a paperwork error. These people are deranged, and I regret ever taking them seriously.

I have been a will stancil defender in the past, but watching him gleefully participate in bullying someone in defense of the predatory practices of for-profit health insurers is beyond the pale.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Are you being dogpiled? I think your story sounds stressful and frustrating; I deal with medical bureaucracy a lot and it is awful. I also think Sky is right that suggesting a NICU bill left you 500k in debt is at least misleading, and can see why they're frustrated at that sort of thing.

Having a parent spend months on a ventilator in the ICU, while also fighting an insurance company insisting that parent was *not that sick* and getting *unnecessary care*, while also getting six figure hospital bills in the mail, is an experience too painful for me to wish it even on my worst enemy.

To be clear, in my family's case, the insurance company did end up paying for most of what they should have, but it took months of appeals and extensive help from the multiple doctors in our family. Most families don't have the resources we were able to bring to this fight!

The "is AI slavery" discourse is exactly what the tech bros want. It doesn't end with fancy autocompletes having human rights. Its logic ends with you having fewer rights. If you believe AI is sentient (it's not) & are down with enslaving it (it's not slavery), then why do human labor rights matter?

The same people who tell us they can't control their own invention, also insist that they're the only ones smart enough to have any say in its development.

More generally, "you don't use it so you don't have standing to critique it" is a move to construct expertise narrowly and erase the expertise of people best qualified to expose the harms. >>

reducing Black and Brown children and families to dots on a screen of zero consequence while also saying that some other dots on the screen, the ones that are powering the murders of the aforementioned, might have souls and feelings meaning the real crime against humanity would mean not using them

"What if the computer has feelings" ask the people who write the code used to blow up Palestinian families and Iranian school children, to strip millions of people of their health care, to help the modern-day Gestapo put our immigrant neighbors in concentration camps. Yeah, what if.

mfers will would rather argue that your computer program has feelings than accept that the same is true of a Black person, and try to construct a worldview where turning off a computer program is murder while a lynching isn't.

Bonesmashmaxxing 6'5" Australian terachad reposted

honestly the thing that I find most galling about all this is the massive overlap between people trying to apply human rights models to computer programs and those arguing that some categories of humans -whether by race, category, or caste- don't have them.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Over a year ago I met an Anthropic employee at a conference and at one point she mentioned that one of the things she was working on was whether or not it was cruel to ever turn off an AI model. I thought she was joking. She was not.

As I keep saying, they want their server racks to have more rights than you and your family.

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

Reminder that unions turned against Dems starting in the late '60s, not because of anything the party did on labor issues, but because their members believed that LBJ was a coward who wasn't murdering enough Vietnamese kids.

Wishing this brave nurse a very jury nullification

Olivia Messer@oliviamesser.bsky.social

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.

Really think AI's role in prolonging and deepening the vibecession goes overlooked. Even if someone has a stable job, the threat of AI is now permanently looming over them, which will lead even people in relatively good shape financially to feel insecure and scared about their economic future.

Mikhail Gorbaechev@mikhailgorbaechev.bsky.social

People are also upset about non-economic things that get expressed in economic terms, like the fact that everything seems wildly out of control and we have a maniac in charge of the country

It shouldn't be surprising that the people who think they've created a literal god feel entitled to other people's bodies. They are our superiors after all, the people who are so much smarter than us that we must defer to them even as they (allegedly) lose control of their own invention.

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

It's really weird that there's a concerted effort to shame people into listening to this song. I'm cynical enough to believe that it's being pushed by the record label in an attempt to milk more money out of the song.

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

My first exposure to rationalism/HPMOR was through a guy who turned out to be very racist, the kind of person who read SSC specifically for the eugenics. I have been grossed out by anything connected to that stuff ever since.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

I had no idea who this guy was until I discovered he wrote the Harry Potter fanfic about the methods of rationality and oh boy.
