my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

I've been saying for a while, and even just minutes ago, that a lot of anti-AI takes are classist, or just straight-up covert right-wing opinions coming out of the mouths of people who call themselves left leaning, and they'll sling death threats at you if you point this out

I disagree about the privilege. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans who don't even have an email. I wouldn't call many of them privileged.

At times I wish people weren't THIS hostile. I recently looked into the progress of self driving cars and I was impressed at how quickly they're expanding, with AI advancements also helping that sector. Having more robotaxis would be a life changer for me who's afraid of driving and is deaf.

near-term I think it will be like refusing to use a smartphone. which is fine, some people do that long-term it will be like refusing to use electricity, but the world will be very different by then

I understand the point. What concerns me is how intentional this devisiveness is. The algos are pummeling us with propaganda and slop. AI hate is literally platformed just as much as the slop itself. I think this is a tactic used to further divide us. Pitting us against our friends for using an app.

my statements are actually because of the polarization and ways in which the culture war has divided people i wish none of what i’m saying needed to be said

I can absolutely see it. I've seen trans women and men on bluesky get *INTENTIONALLY* deadnamed for... being pro AI. By rightwing chuds? NO. BY OTHER TRANS FOLKS

this is not a bit or just rage bait, i am being 100% serious

being anti-AI is ableist actually

I wish more people understood that using AI and being generally in favor of a technology does not equate to supporting any and all usage/implementation of that technology. We all already understand this about computers, the internet, software, cameras, GPS, pharma, etc.

yeahhhh it’s def inflammatory, i personally don’t think the underlying point i’m making is silly (it’s quite serious/personal to me in fact), and i’m sure there’s an arguement to be made that that might be all the more reason *not* to be inflammatory about it

I think it is presumptuous to think that only privileged individuals can hold principled or values-based stances. the pair of this take is "these fools don't know what is in their own interests; but I do!"

while i’m sympathetic to the idea of “ethically trained AI”, i think we’re already past the point of no return in that department for the most part (and i also don’t think “respecting copyright” is a good ethical framework)

Techbro inevitabilism isn’t necessary nor the only path forward. We can shape our world in a way that doesn’t involve disrespecting others, one that is more harmonious with the ebb and flow of nature. Slow and steady may impede progress, but always better/considered than move fast and break things

i mean i don’t disagree with you necessarily but we quite literally are past a threshold and point by which we can’t go back fine or penalize the big AI labs for what they did, make them pay and fund public goods, but we can’t undo what’s happened or how far this tech is now

That's a lot of catchphrases with no plan behind them, propped up by an assumption that the resources probably exist. The real path forward isn't "someone other than me figures out how to make an AI using only public domain material," it's "everyone contributed to this so everyone gets to use it."

I'm from latin-america, and I agree. The biggest difference I've seen among small business is AI allowing you to punch at bigger companies. Chinese AI is EXTREMELY more cost-effective for us though.

It is also a example of the inter-petite bourgious nature of this conflict tbh. People selling flyers get assumed support for high prices while other small buisness raising prices so they can pay artists too get attacked

If the people making it weren’t evil, the tides would turn. Sounds trite, but if everyone’s basic needs were met, the tides would turn. idk how we get there though

I have yet to figure out how the AI companies are more evil than the median Fortune 500 company. Every time I try reading people who believe that, it's bogged down in circular logic: AI is an evil thing because it's made by evil people, AI makers are evil people because they make an evil thing...

I didn't say that they are! But when the promise of AI is mostly white collar job elimination or human extinction, that seems pretty evil to me. It's kind of like how boomers have embraced ai; they don't fear loss of jobs, because they're either retired or already set for retirement

that’s not the promise of AI, there is no promise of AI. There are just tons of ways it can be used, and there are tons of ways that theoretically this could go down.

I think the political economy of the thing is somewhat to guns. (Very weak argument but I'm currently at my job so forgive me). Malcolm X saying that political power comes out of the barrel of a gun is not an endorsement of Heckler and Koch. Does that make sense?
