It's important to him because he's a white supremacist, which is the same reason he avoids mentioning the Nazis or Confederates when he lists the foes America has defeated. My guess is at least one of his speechwriters believes the wrong side lost in WW2, if Hegseth doesn't.

Sagittarius A*@sagastar.bsky.social

he means black people with shaving waivers, because black folks physically can't do the clean shaven thing the way white people can without skin irritation. at least some portion of the time. why this is important to him is unclear.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

Where is her legal defense fund

Olivia Messer@oliviamesser.bsky.social

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.

United States President Donald Trump issues executive order instructing federal government agencies to "use the terms 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' and will not acknowledge the usage of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in any applicable setting."

i thought her early stuff was too “not like the other girls” and didn’t enjoy her particularly until a lot more recently. her newer stuff has mature reflections of what it’s like to be a woman of a certain age, looking down the road at being past her prime

Even if you think especially highly of Swift as a master of pop craft (which I do), there's a clear progression in her work where she simply doesn't have experience from which to write interesting songs anymore because she hasn't had close to a normal life in a decade and a half.

Look, let's clear this up. LLMs can't think or understand because those are evolved capabilities of embodied living organisms embedded in the physical and social world and LLMs aren't that. Don't make it harder than it is.

Birth of a Nation was highly controversial at the time. It wasn't, like, taken for granted as normal even then. It was banned in some places (1A wasn't what it is today on that). Wilson screening it in the White House was a statement, and such an unpopular one he had to halfheartedly walk it back.

i think most of us agree, semantically, the word “understanding” connotes an experience that requires self awareness the models compute in ways that look like reasoning but that doesn’t mean they are experiencing anything

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Again: what we’re doing here is defining “understanding” as “the thing that humans do.” If a model is accurately absorbing new information, solving unsolved problems of incredible difficulty, engaging in detailed back-and-forths, but is not “understanding,” the word “understanding” has no meaning.

i hate gratuitous depictions of violence in film and television. 99.9% of the time, there’s no reason to show it. it can easily be implied (currently fast forwarding past a scene of river cartwright getting worked over by the dogs on an episode of Slow Horses. because it’s nauseating to watch)

he’s going all-in on it because he is a true hater of the deep state. and the deep state wants the tech for itself alone and us not to be able to use it back

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

We need to be absolutely clear. Donald Trump is trying to forestall any meaningful limit on AI development, which even the people developing it say has a serious chance of dooming humanity, for one reason. The midterms.

“sex-based rights” IS inherently a roll-back of universal human rights. the concept exists exclusively to serve that purpose, and no other

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

I hate doing the "a rollback of trans rights is the gateway for a rollback of women's rights" thing because trans rights are human rights in and of themselves, whatever the impact on cis women. But goddamn I wish more cis women had a sense of history and self preservation.

The last time a paranoid despot militarized his capital city, he faced mass protests for stealing the election. A large portion of his own military, including the minister of defense & army vice chief of staff, defected to the opposition. Before long, he & all of his wife’s shoes fled into exile.

Dan Murphy@bungdan.bsky.social

Trump says he is building a massive sniper and attack drone base overlooking the main area in Washington where citizens gather to express their discontent with the government. He says he is also building a massive attack drone and sniper base at the White House, a mile away. Seems bad.

Trump saying we urgently need well stocked sniper nests overlooking the nation’s main location for political protest should ring alarm bells.

David Rothschild@davmicrot.bsky.social

Get that it is a legal strategy for Trump to take our money & heritage in the name of the military: but building a sniper nest on the National Mall really feels like a threat to free assembly & speech, as if the only obvious use would be strike down people protesting Trump’s regime.
