in this interview, @pastpunditry.bsky.social says possibly the smartest thing i've heard about gender and the 2024 election (and by extension 2016 also), which is that having Harris as an opponent gave Trump leverage to make certain kinds of gendered appeals

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

"We have not seen the end of this idea of a 'crisis of men' for reactionary politics. That will be with us for a very long time." I asked Nicole Hemmer if Trump use of misogyny as midterm Hail Mary will flop because the 2024 moment has passed. Her answer is good: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

If they lose power, expect Republicans in several states to strip powers from incoming Democrats, pass voting restrictions, and new gerrymanders. They did it after losing governors races in NC in 2016 and 2024, MI and WI in 2018, and KY in 2019. They preemptively did it ahead of losing IA this year

Georgia is one of the main states to watch for Republicans to redo their WI/NC playbook of using the lame duck session to entrench power after losing elections. New reporting on what they might do if they lose: www.ajc.com/politics/202...

What's oddly encouraging is that the right and various media handmaidens seem to be running out of ideas and organizational capacity to execute them. This all feels old hat, like retorting "Where' the beef?" to people born in 2008.

Young ‘uns: this stuff happened once a week during Obama’s presidency. Dijon mustard. Moving a bust of Churchill. Inviting a rapper to the White House. Putting his feet up on his desk. They’d scream and cry for days about how effete and snobby and Black he was and how misinderstood they were.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

But the fact is that modern liberal, center-left, and left political movements are *insufficiently* transnationalized — especially when compared to the transnational right. We are *behind* the curve. Our leaders are behind the curve.

Great thread with a fantastic reading list. If anything, borders themselves are endogenous to boundaryless politics and political processes.
