the markets have essentially become a gauge for how much corruption the government in power is going to let the business class get away with

Suck ass, The Economist

I would be less antagonistic if the end goal of the Ai companies weren’t to enclose the intellectual commons just so they can sell it back to us. Some people think that sounds fine because they get some application from it and others also see it as the wholesale theft of their intellectual efforts.

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

Things would feel very different if Ai was being democratized as a public resource and not as something to be monopolized for the profit of a few companies.

I understand that there are many useful application for machine learning tools and the various algorithms but I also don’t want to live in a world where everything is a facsimile because it provides someone a competitive advantage.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

helenwebberley.comAre transgender sports bans really about protecting women? | Dr Helen WebberleyThe data says no. Those most hostile to women are most in favour of banning trans athletes.

There was a thread the other day on here about all the things that have gotten better in our lifetimes, and it seemed half of them were about environmental quality. (No more smog, no more flaming rivers, etc.) All that is being aggressively undone.

the Bolsonaros know how important Brazil is to the US and, in their desperate attempt to escape prison, they try to bargain their own country to Trump in exchange for leadership

no matter how sure you are that these guys have broken a whole bunch of laws, you aren't nearly as certain as they are

Holly Brewer@earlymodjustice.bsky.social

“Several conservative organizations …— including the Heritage Foundation and American Moment — have pressed White House counsel to either prepare pardons or put in place funding for the legal fees necessary to defend junior staffers from criminal and congressional probes or potential lawsuits.”

It’s not hard to believe that an obscenely rich guy would buy up a company just to keep people from seeing an unflattering documentary. He just dumped a billion dollars to keep his buddy’s company afloat.

I haven't confirmed that MUSK is being pulled from theaters, but here's reporting on the deal, including the Tosca Musk link www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Dr Oz denounces "crypto thieves" who "back their truck up to the federal treasury, and dump cash out. And then they use that money to do really bad things."

I’ve been informed that people do indeed ride bikes in Iowa. But this is what you get when the fossil fuel industry is your party’s primary donor.

Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."

I would love to but then I would have to sell some stock and I don’t want to do that.

California voters will decide next month whether roughly 250 billionaires in the state must pay a one-time tax on their riches. Mark Zuckerberg says he would need to sell Meta stock to pay the 5 percent tax on his assets under California’s voter measure.

I tell the kids that making promises just so you can get what you want might work in the moment but eventually, if you never keep any of those promises, people will stop accepting them. Donald is a nine year old kid.

Trump: "With Roger Marshall in the Senate, we will make year-round E15 permanent. But if Adam Hamilton is in, I'm not going it. That's it. I'm only doing it for him. That's a big deal for Kansas."

Donald grew up in a rich kid bubble so he could always just get what he wanted by ordering people to do it. He never had to invest in a trust system. He had no use for it other than using it to manipulate people. He violates people’s trust and then uses his money to shield himself from consequences.

Let’s link the well being of future generations to the success of one man’s mega corporation. What could go wrong?

“As long as a certain number of people remained convinced of the fantasy narrative of our construction we will continue to act as if it’s true.” 🤪 It’s post truth politics.

KERNEN: You have never seen Americans so sour on the economy HASSETT: The thing about the sour -- when you look at surveys, Dems think we're in the Great Depression. Republicans think things are fine. So surveys have lost their value. It's a very very strong economy, one of the strongest we've seen

Playing music has been such an unfailing force for good in my life. And the best part is there's always more of it. I can learn and learn and learn and never run out of things to learn.

Wealth is the foundational source of segregation. The police are there to enforce that segregation. No trespassing means you have the legal right, to be enforced by the police, to an area of personal segregation. You can actually hire people to keep people away from you. Portable force field.

In the past you had to hire your own goons to protect you and your stuff. But they could turn on you and they cost lots of money. It’s better to have the “lessers” pay to patrol themselves. “No breaking the law!”

With enough money you never have to rub shoulders with the “riff raff” unless it’s a “cultural experience.” Suburbia is this on a different scale. They gladly pay higher prices for the exclusivity. Price is a wall that keeps out the peasants.

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Yup. This is why Musk is particularly dangerous right now. He threw his lot in with the right and now he could lose A LOT if they lose power. Expect him to go apeshit if it looks like the Dems are gonna take power in both houses.

David Rothschild@davmicrot.bsky.social

And, again this should be obvious to Wall Street: if/when there is another Democratic US president they're going to be weary about a continued defense arrangement with drug-addled right-wing-extremist trillionaire funneling the government's money back into undermining democracy around the world.
