I like your policy to fix inequality, but I also like the other guy's policy to make billionaires richer. I like your policies protecting the environment, but I also like the other lot's policies allowing businesses to do whatever they want. I really think the two sides should work together!

So why are profs of law, science & politics & on strike today? We’re here for colleagues. HALF of NZ university staff are now on temporary contracts! 54% Research has become like the hunger games as some of our brightest minds compete for temp work - they can’t live like this #INVESTinResearch

this video of Chlöe Swarbrick, who leads the Greens in New Zealand's parliament, is worth your five minutes' time

That, I think, is why some of the attacks on Swarbrick feel oddly objectless. The danger isn’t just what she might do as Finance Minister. It’s what she might reveal about the people who have spent 40 years telling us the money is all gone. andrewdicksonnz.substack.com/p/chloe-swar...

The question is who should you put your effort into convincing? A random poster on Bluesky with 300 followers, who is angry about being thrown under the bus, or the people with/seeking actual power who are doing the throwing.

It’s like clockwork: three months before a critical election, people start up with the “don’t for Dems! Teach them a lesson by NOT voting” lunacy.

Much has been made of the decision to use American accents in The Odyssey, but after rewatching some scenes from Gladiator, I find the English accents quite jarring. People's natural accents just fade into the background in a way a fake English accent doesn't.

The only times the accents took me out of The Odyssey were when some of the English actors, notably Himesh Patel, didn't quite nail the accent. I think it would probably have been better if he'd just spoken normally.

Watched the Raygun documentary. I really wanted more of a focus on how vicious the backlash was. It reminds me a lot of the Jason Arday situation. Too many people get a kick out of being cruel. Rachael managed to weather the storm, but it could so easily have ended the same.

So... quick reminder.... executive orders are not laws. executive orders are not laws. executive orders are not laws. executive orders are not laws. executive orders are not laws. executive orders are not laws. EXECUTIVE ORDERS ARE NOT LAWS. guides.library.umass.edu/govinfo/exec...

Ok, I checked out My Brilliant Career because it was highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and I couldn't make it more than 10 minutes because the main character spoke like a time traveller from the present. Anyway, I can't review the bits I haven't seen, but it certainly didn't reel me in.

Or perhaps labelling it a genocide has an actual function in international law that puts specific responsibilities on governments: to act to prevent it, and to not be complicit in it.

Even by reactionary centrist standards, this is an insane issue to hang this argument on. Gaza *is* a case of an oppressor and victim. There's no "both sides" reason why hospitals need to be bombed and children starved.

The absurdity of saying "everyone knows everyone" in a town of tens of thousands of people... What they really mean is "everyone *important* knows one another". The important class in this small city is at most a couple of hundred people.

He was suspended because he was promoting racism instead of doing the job he was hired for.

roterote aka Hunter CG@roterote.bsky.social

Here is the full suspension letter from UGent that was sent to Nathan Cofnas, it shows ample reason for his suspension and potential termination. Including breach of contract, using the University of Ghent’s name and legitimacy to promote his racial supremacist views and causing reputational damage.

I really hate that to even admit that I find LLMs personally useful is a risky thing to say on this website no matter how many caveats I put on it.

I think Hailey is right, and we can change paths here but we have to be skillful

The ending might be the most frightening part: "The only solution to the dangerous autonomous hacking agents we accidentally created is to give our totally trustworthy defensive agents commit access to your repos"

Roger Parloff@rparloff.bsky.social

scary beyond scary. AI agents—autonomous software systems—being tested by humans form teams; pool information; divvy up tasks; and then escape to the Internet—despite humans' attempts to prevent that—& hack into another company. (Or something like that.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Dy...

No matter how much the Democrats actively work against their left flank, then eat shit at the next election, the solution is always to reject the Left even more. Just admit you don't like progressive policies. Your predictions of doom are just wishcasting.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

The vibes may be exciting, but if Democrats are going to win this year and in 2028, they must reject the DSA. If you’re tempted by a democratic socialist this year, think of what use Republicans will make of these victories, and ask whether you want to do favors for fascists.

The Count Binface stuff reminds me that the US doesn't seem to have a tradition of joke/satirical candidates the way the UK does. I'm sure there are reasons related to how primaries work over there, but you really ought to consider bringing them in.
