I like the Cheesecake Factory. My wife and I go to the one at the mall when we feel like getting a decent meal at a sit-down place we can still take our toddler to. And I don’t even dislike the decor! I just don’t think the *White House* should emulate its style.

Incredibly, this is David BlueSky post #2 specifically on the decor at the Cheesecake Factory.

Is it just me, or do these Cheesecake Factory light fixtures have real Barad-Dur/Eye of Sauron vibes?

As AIPAC announces its retreat from campaign contributions and endorsements, I take no pleasure* in pointing out that I predicted their foray into this space would backfire spectacularly from the moment they first announced it. * I'm kidding: I take a ton of pleasure in it.

You can refuse a pardon. So at minimum, day one of a D admin ask all affected fed employees: “Do you accept or refuse the pardon?”, and if they accepted it, they’re immediately fired.

On a visit to a Buddhist monastery in Japan, I was surprised by my visceral unwillingness to participate in a ritual. On the blog, I reflect on that reaction and how it might inform efforts to reform antidiscrimination law. Also, there's a picture of a cute deer in front of the subway entrance.👇

All my political donations will go to the next DA who manages to meaningfully go after spam/scam texters/callers. (I know many of them are based in SE Asia, but some definitely aren't, and they deserve to have every inch of our runaway, bloated carceral-industrial complex shoved down their throat).

I think there's a decent chance that if Dems win the presidency with a trifecta in 2028, Roberts retires, and I think we should understand that as a gesture of good faith and return the favor by agreeing to only expand the Court to 11 rather than 13.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

I'm gonna be honest: if we don't want the Court to expand, two conservative justices need to get off the Court while Dems hold it, and I have preferences for who those are, but I won't be picky.

I guess I understand people being underwhelmed by Kotek, but I don't get the appeal of Drazan at all, aside from the classic brain-rotted "things aren't great now, but maybe if we elect someone worse it'll get better!"

The Portland City Council elections are fascinating, in that they're hotly contested, multi-seat RCV races with widespread voter dissatisfaction re the status quo, and yet it feels extremely likely that every incumbent will win again (to the consternation of basically everyone).

Every so often the ghost of Ted Stevens is roused to claim vindication: “It IS a series of tubes!”

The problem is that raw computing power is only one variable in this situation. The other, and equally important variable is bandwidth, in particular with memory. Think of bandwidth as your data transport pipes, which is why your newer smartphone with newer RAM loads apps faster than your old phone.

After living through a few years of vice-signaling, virtue-signaling doesn’t seem so bad anymore.

Jane Coaston@janecoaston.bsky.social

once again, you're *supposed* to signal virtue, while also attempting to *possess* it.

Being untenured is like being a baby pig on a farm. You look at senior faculty and are like “these guys are my friends! They feed me and shelter me and nurture me…. They’re so caring!” And they look at you and are like “we probably shouldn’t give this guy a name in case we need to, you know…”

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

I CANNOT not read this as "St. Pancreas".

Three years ago today, on October 7, 2023, Hamas invaded Israel and carried out a deadly, horrific attack, murdering around 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. Families were torn apart in a single morning. We remember every one of them.

The striking thing about this chart is how clearly it shows that, for many, "immigration" is primarily a means of rendering moral judgment about whole nationalities. Far more people are MAGA-on-Somalis than they'd ever admit (they just swap some countries around). h/t @jackkessler.bsky.social

One of my least favorite political narratives is this weird idea that it’s *obvious* how to defeat the fascists and the only reason Democrats don’t do it is because they’re feckless/corrupt/cowards.

The thing is that Lula kinda did what Biden should have done. Jair Bolsanaro was jailed and disqualified. Clearly not enough though.

The fact that this idiocy got past an editor in a book on godamn punctuation shows how deep the ignorance of Judaism and Jewish history is in the wider culture and how that ignorance is being weaponized so as to create a better scapegoat for Western uses
