Just saw Josh Widdicombe on Who do you Think You Are. He seems like a nice enough chap, and the history was quite interesting, but it's all twaddle-bollocks isn't it? I mean, if he's a descendant of someone 15 generations back, so is everyone alive today with British ancestry.

Actually, I did the maths in my head a bit wrong there (I've had a long day). So you'd have to go back a bit further to guarantee that we all have exactly the same ancestors as Josh W, but there are certainly huge numbers of us who share his interesting ancestors.

So, now my brain is back in gear, and IIRC from last night, Josh W is a descendant of Edward I - 24 generations ago. If everyone in JW's tree only cropped up once in that tree, he'd have about 17m ancestors alive at that time - when the population was about 5m? So it's an unremarkable heritage.

Talking of L to R transitions, I'd be fascinated to hear you guys' take on the Furedi cult (RCP, AKA... and with more fronts than a rhombicosidodecahedron) who moved incrementally from far left to far right (via libertarianism and general contrariness) without ever declaring any changes of mind.

... and, like Brand, in spite of the vertigo inducing twists and turns in their thinking, there remains a kind of deep continuity in the way they have always operated and continue to operate.

🧵With a big thank you to Dr Mel for this. How have I not visited this? Rooley Moor Road, Rochdale or The Cotton Famine Road, is a lasting reminder of hardship, resilience and solidarity. During the Lancashire Cotton Famine, caused by the disruption of cotton supplies during the American Civil War,

Dear FirmsWhoSellPictureFramesOnTheInternet* To even consider a frame, I need *3* sets of measurements (or the info to calculate them myself): 1) Outer frame; 2) Poster accepted (rebate to rebate); 3) Front opening. Without this info, I am never going to order your products.

I wrote about Elon Musk, and why it bothers me that he is still first and foremost described in the media as an entrepreneur, rocketeer, or tech mogul, when the most salient fact about him is that he is now the world's most powerful white supremacist. religiondispatches.org/2026/10/06/e...

Counter: severe tax cliff edges, particularly in cases like this when the marginal rate spirals into infinity, are bad for everyone. They mutilate incentives and reduce overall wealth. They should be fixed and not avoided simply because they initially benefit wealthy people.

One of the most interesting biographies I discovered during my #DecolonisingChemistry project for the @chemistryatyork.bsky.social curriculum was that of Alice Ball a black chemist, whose leprosy treatment, using carbonyl chemistry to build on traditional medicine, was stolen by a male colleague.

Day 16. Today’s #SciArtSeptember shape prompt, scallop, made me think of scalloped leaves. Feeling autumn in the air, I decided to make four prints about leaf colour chemistry using bur oak leaves. 🧪 Every autumn we marvel at the beautiful change in the colour of leaves of our deciduous trees. 🧵

A really interesting thread:

🧪Classic sci-fi can lead you down some fascinating paths, and today I learn that the Diamond Lens microscope, which is central to the first story here, was a real thing, created by London optician Andrew Pritchard trying to avoid chromatic aberration.... stg-productions.simplecast.com

There was a very active critic of the history syllabus in the 90s. Very wise people scoffed at how much time kids were forced to spend learning about the Nazis and democratic decay in the 30s. Turns out we should have gone much harder.

Aside from the messiness of this, I am very uncomfortable with the idea that two people convicted of the same crime should be treated differently because politicians and the public are really angry about one but don't know or care about the other. Not a good way to do justice policy

According to reports, the government is looking at exempting anyone convicted of ‘unlawful act’ manslaughter from early release. This could prevent two of PC Harper’s killers from leaving prison in January - but it would come with complications. (1/4) www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

The depressing thing about the US isn't Trump really. He's just a grotesque. It's the complete failure of all the things liberals believe in: Congress, the judiciary, the press, voters themselves, all persistently unwilling or unable to stop him. It's the failure of an entire society.
