There's something satisfying about sawing through a sink trap I've hated for a decade and replacing it in under 15 minutes.

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

This new, shocking action by the US Administration just one part of a portfolio of severe taxes and restrictions on high-skill immigration to the United States. The resulting blow to our ability to attract global talent, and thus for the US economy to innovate & grow, will be terrible & permanent.

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me. It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."

Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

I am *so* excited to see this mission launch! Earlier this year I spoke with several #NISAR scientists about how this satellite is going to change the game, and it really is going to be a data powerhouse for understanding the Earth system. 🧪🛰️❄️🌳 eos.org/articles/tra...

I've been waiting for #NISAR to launch for many years... looking forward to what it can provide the world of earth observation! Have a safe ride uphill!

I remember reading about comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Jupiter in the newspaper and seeing clips on the news. (I may still have some of those articles in my scrapbook!) Absolutely wild to see an impact scar on Jupiter the size of the Earth!

I've told this story about my early education on fascism before but not on Bluesky. I vividly recall doing a project in school about history. Maybe I wanted to do the Korean War because I was a big MASH fan. That I don't recall. My physics teacher arranged for me to do a live interview... 🧵

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

I presented my #AGU24 talk this morning and wanted to summarize my take homes. 20 yrs ago I created the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) to experimentally push hydrology into wetter and drier modes. CO2 emissions are remarkable stable while CH4 is very high with flooding. 1/

Some of the nice things about #AGU24 being local are that I don't have to book a hotel, can still see family, etc. They're also the most challenging things. 75% of what I want to see is first thing in the morning, while I'm still getting my family going for the day and riding the Metro downtown.

You are up to date.
