I will say one thing for AI slop; it has radically increased my appreciation of shitty art. Like maybe it lacks creativity, maybe the execution is unskilled, maybe the motivation for making it was commercial, but damned if a human being didn't think of and create it with their own mind and body.

They're not going to run out of the absolute worst people with the absolute worst politics to replace the previous absolute worst person with. The barrel is bottomless, we have to eliminate the position, the agency, and unbuild the whole institution.

INBOX: the police chief of Quakertown, Pa., led a group of plainclothes officers to disrupt a peaceful high school student sidewalk protest yesterday. They threw an underage girl to the ground, choked her, and disconnected all calls to the detention center where she and others are currently held.

I've been working on a network of webrings to connect people's hobby sites! I have multiple lines that I visualize as subway lines, so I call it the Smallweb Subway! Every station is someone's website. You can explore it here: gusbus.space/smallweb-sub... #smallweb #webdev #webring

I bought a cheap, lightweight guillotine cutter the other day and it brings me joy, mingled with a frisson of fear. The heavier-duty ones were always in classrooms, and we were always given dire warnings about amputation risk. It's not the most dangerous object in the house, but it *feels* like it.

This past week, I did an absolutely terrible job of reviewing a master and learned that color copies on cardstock do not fold as well as expected. Fortunately, these errors were for the same (very tiny) job, thus only rising to the level of "slight inconvenience."

Oh, yeah, since some amount of national shutting down is occurring today...please don't buy this or anything else from the shops today.

Minizine just dropped. Advice for new editors and publishers: "How to Call for Submissions without Annoying Writers." scopecreeppress.neocities.org

Sigh. Right after releasing a zine that mentions SFWA as a good source of information for writers, the organization embraced LLM works for the Nebula Awards. They quickly backtracked, but still... SFWA does have some good resources online, but at this point maybe think twice about joining.

Trying to guess if the Calibri hate is down to the word "Roman" or accessibility. Calibri hadn't been on my radar as particularly accessible, beyond being a sans serif font (so, like, presumptively better than TNR, but not, say, a Comic Sans).

But it reads like Bob asked Alice to switch fonts because then he'll only have to zoom in 150% rather than 200%, not like the result of a careful accessibility audit. (I could be wrong; maybe Calibri's better than I'm giving it credit for!) Which just kind of highlights this admin's childishness.

Not that we needed more highlights--the highlighter has worn through the paper, and several sheets beneath. But really? They're so desperate to vice signal that a Big Evil Company's decades-old font is worthy of comment?

Note that Calibri's also a) a Microsoft default and b) a proprietary font. Nothing necessarily wrong with either--MS is ubiquitous--but it's a lazy sans serif font choice for documents. (Nothing wrong with lazy!)

Thank you everyone who's contributed! We're now over 50% to our monthly funding goal, which will allow us to be a pretty reliably sustainable volunteer-run organization that is still able to spend money on e.g. legal, hardware, hosting, etc, costs as we need in order to fulfill our mission!
