I was foolishly invited to a swanky business awards dinner Tuesday night where I mingled with the Great and the Good and found myself chatting with a proud Trump voter. Look at me, all patient and understanding of the other side! Here’s a little thread of my adventure in reasoning 👇🏼

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

The citizen who yelled "Shove that ballroom up your fat ass" is, in this hard time, a patriot. Honestly, what is left to say about this level of misrule? What careful critique hasn't been already offered? What reasoned response to this full-on run at fascism and kleptocracy remained unspoken?

Mississauga just ushered in a historic, long overdue generational shift. Alvin Tedjo skipped the political games and spent the campaign meeting people where they are: cafes, restaurants, community spaces Now he’s the first racialized mayor of Canada’s 6th largest city. www.cp24.com/news/2026/10...

Two episodes in, I’m forced to admit I was wrong. While there’s still no *need* for a fourth(!) version of CARRIE, this new version is a smart and serious update. Not sure about the conspiracy B-plot mixing in other King ideas (the way CASTLE ROCK did) but the bullying focus gives this real power 🔥

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning. The force is out of balance. They are viscerally eager to go after Dems about something.

I know it’s really distasteful and dispiriting and gross to think about, but you won’t understand Trumpist politics or the status of women if you don’t understand that a lot of people aren’t just in denial about the prevalence of rape; they are affirmatively pro-rape.

The UCP might make Edmonton pay up to $170M to rip out its own bike lanes. I've heard reports that the UCP has been asking for costs of full network removals. City numbers put that at $150-170M This is the same gov't that just spent $130M on a glorified opinion poll.

Corporate profits are at record highs — but revenue from corporate taxes has plummeted thanks to the tax cuts in Trump and Republicans’ big, ugly bill. Meanwhile, workers’ wages are stagnant and their share of the nation’s income is at a record low. Trickle-down economics was always a hoax.

Surprised by how sad I feel at Walter Koenig’s passing. The TREK actors were dear to my heart. I have…mixed feelings about William Shatner, loved Nichelle Nichols, cried when Leonard Nimoy left us, and need @georgetakei.bsky.social to know TODAY that he is one of my great heroes ❤️

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

Everything from the recent BC election to Brexit to Trump is understandable as an attempt to manipulate democracy by limiting voters' options to either what the back room wants, or something really against their own interests, and voters sending a long term message no matter the short term price.

The #SaveMassEffect movement reminds me of when the century-old bookshop I worked for closed in 1999 and we were all put out of work. “What’s going to happen to this beautiful store??” asked one old customer. I, fearing eviction, said, “I’m sure it’ll become a lovely Starbucks.” AND IT DID 😮

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.
