Uber needs to have a button to cancel a ride in the specific situation when you’re heading to your driver and the trip has suddenly started without you because the driver picked up the wrong passenger and neither one of them bothered verifying. Just happened.

@hiddenbrain.bsky.social I’m listening to the show on turning around a downward spiral. You ask listeners to send in stories; subject line: “failure.” OMG. You just made it harder for listeners. Better: “reversing the negative spiral” or “challenging failure.” Something not so utterly downbeat.

Can someone be please stop the president from further demolition/construction on the White House? He doesn’t own the place. Doesn’t even pay rent. How is this legal? Would anyone like to start a lawsuit? One thing is clear: asking him to stop isn’t working. www.cnn.com/2025/10/22/p...

Nobody heard of the NSC Directorate for Global Health and Security and Bio-Defense back in 2018. And then Trump closed it, in the words of @bethcameron-dc.bsky.social. apnews.com/article/dona... The rest is history.

@rufus-hickok.bsky.social “Too Late to Call” is turning into a Banquo’s ghost of a song, constantly popping up, then morphing into something like “Goodbye to You” or, most recently, Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.” I oughta play it for my guitarist autistic son, who spots similarities in music.

I rarely post personal things. But I need to talk about my 4-year-old niece, Hope. She has a rare disease. A drug called elamipretide has helped her survive. But the FDA recently denied its approval. Now, her health hangs in the balance. Please share her story & urge the FDA to reconsider. 🧵

Listening to Sarah Sherman interview on Good One podcast. Vulgar and funny. Does she realize that the greatest thing she does is give viewers a moment of relief when she shows up on Weekend Update—because we know it’ll work.

“We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader” is hiding,” Trump wrote. “He is an easy target, but is safe there—We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.” It’s serious stuff but still: what are the chances anyone thought “take out” was dinner and a movie?

May 1 I submitted 3 short pieces of flash nonfiction to Brevity. Today I found 3 rejection emails. Gently encouraging, in a form-email way, but I envision the reader holding each story at a distance, with thumb and forefinger, like me years ago with my kids’ dirty diapers: eew, where do I put this.

Yesterday I read, on a whim, the final third of “Marathon Man.” I’m not sure how we got the book. I’ve seen the movie a couple of times, but even with no surprises left, that book is propulsive.

Every time the White House makes another brilliant move I say to a friend who voted for him: “See what your boy did now.” He says, irritated, “He’s not my boy.” Such fun. Not quite an offset to our imploding democracy, but fun.

I just got an email from an investing service that starts “Dow plunges almost 1500” and then asks the usual question to link to their site: “Is this email difficult to read?” Yup. Yes indeed.

@tmcallister.bsky.social I read your NYT essay on AI in creative writing—or the impossibility of such a union. Loved it. I imagine you can feed AI with data to replicate someone’s unique voice, but the result would be a simulacrum. Yet I fear that “close enough” might satisfy people, once AI is all.

Apparently, I’m not a multitasker. I was listening to The Daily, about the WH’s Signal disaster (the phrase works whether or not it’s a capital S), while going thru emails. I stopped at an email from NYT Cooking and had a quick mental audible of our prez saying “I’d always wanted to make biryani.”
