I'm going to try to do this cleanly.
Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.
Impress your kids by making them type this ratio into their calculator.
"0.857142857"
They'll ask "Why should I be impressed?"
"Multiply it by 7."
Minds will blow.
Of course, if you really want to blow their minds, make them repeat 857142 ad infinitum into their calculators.
You will get closer to, but never reach...
"The path forward is obvious. We let Sauron retain full power for another two years. Let the people experience a little more darkness while we clean house. Get our own ranks in order. Get rid of all those unity-chasing wackos that are tearing our Fellowship apart."

In many ways, North Island-Powell River Conservative MP Aaron Gunn's political arc mirrors that of B.C. rightwing politics. In 2021, the BC Liberals denied him a run at leader. So, he and some friends reanimated the moribund BC Conservatives in 2024. Tonight, the maker of the "Vancouver is Dying"...
BC has elected a Conservative majority government for the first time in nearly 100 yrs, delivering a remarkable reversal of fortunes to a party that entered the campaign after months of internal conflict and controversies:

B.C. Green Party Leader Emily Lowan: "We are the only party equipped to stand against the Conservatives and what they stand for... Over the next four years our job is to be a voice for the many people who will be harmed by their policies"
Eby lost this election through multiple egregious mistakes, arrogance & lack of political skill.
But we also need to see his catastrophic loss as proof of what happens when "progressives" swing to the right.
Eby is not the first centrist to be taught this lesson. Can the NDP learn?

Be sad and be angry. But then: you need to decide what you love, and what you want to fight for: Climate. Old growth. Health care. Reconciliation. Trans kids. Transit. The arts. Gather your people. Offer your skills. Show up, in person, in your communities. Organize. Find joy in it.

Conservatives cross pollinate. We have conservatives, influenced by Victor Orban and Javier Millei, looking for ways to take power - not to govern - but to dismantle government.
And what they attack are the institutions. Your research, your schools, your hospitals, your media, they blitz it.
Sure Iβm upset with the BC NDP for calling this election and other things. But I understand order of magnitude. My frustration with them isnβt within the same galaxy as my concern with handing a blank check of power to an extremist BC Conservative Party that hasnβt even picked their REAL leader yet.
So BC, one of MANY problems with voting for an interim leader who youβre thinking seems βmore reasonableβ than the rest of their obviously extremist party, is that the extremist party WILL pick a REAL leader AFTER youβve given them power and can pick their worst extremist option anytime they want.
I gasped when I saw the statistics of wealth concentration shown here by the Federal Reserve:

It's insanely top heavy.

Furthermore, roughly three-quarters of the top 0.1%βs wealth portfolio consists of corporate and business ownership":

"...allowing them to benefit from the Trump tax cuts in multiple ways...

"Itβs also important to understand that the top 0.1% have a different tax exposure from the rest of the top 1% because the composition of their wealth is different. They own as much in stocks and mutual funds as the next 0.9%..."
An NDP minority needing Green support is still possible. (If that happens, Eby will resign).
And a slim Maple MAGA majority is better than a big Maple MAGA majority. #Vote! #bcpoli
This is @mattyglesias.bsky.social approach not just to immigration, but to antitrust and climate as well.
Don't oppose. Don't set an agenda. Follow the crowd. Win and do nothing (ie. moderate).
It's David Schor popularism and it's very popular with donors.
Why?
A helpfully clear exchange here
Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028."
Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"
for republicans their most effective thing is the day-to-day propaganda machine, including the amplifying effect of the mainstream media. democrats have invested essentially zero into this and its a big reason they lose.
for democrats, they are winning because gop cannot govern. thats it.
Data that would have told us what impact the One Big Beautiful Bill had on Americans β scheduled for release by the IRS in July β never became public.
Here's one more reason we have to stop the BC Conservatives.
Health care workers are warning us: setting up a parallel private health care track like Alberta's doing is a road to disaster.
NEW: A high-ranking Republican tried to curb the unchecked growth of West Virginiaβs school voucher program.
Then three PACs β bankrolled by pro-school choice billionaires like the Koch family and Jeffrey Yass β worked to take him down.

𧡠I think YMCA has finally gotten into Trump's heart and soul

No country should trust the U.S. as an ally as long as treacherous, greedy authoritarians are in charge of the U.S. government. The U.S. should be treated as a pariah by all democratic nations.
Bessent repeatedly refuses to say that Ukraine is still a US ally: "President Trump has made clear that he wants to end this war, that it must stop ... I'm not the secretary of state. I'm not the president."

AI slop is the medium of post-truth. Itβs for people who reject the value of factual reality, canβt appeal to the public based on the truth, and want everyone to live inside a lie.
Unsurprisingly, Republicans are using it much more in campaigns.
The use of AI in political ads is not evenly distributed:
βMore than 80 percent of the ads were produced by Republican campaigns or Republican-aligned political action committeesβ

A separatist vote win, or even a relatively high separatist loss, would IMMEDIATELY DAMAGE CANADA, particularly economically, as it would send a message to every possible investor in Alberta and Canada that such an investment is a bad bet.
