However much you think gutting USAID cost the world, you’re probably underestimating it.

Prof Gavin Yamey MD MPH@gavinyamey.bsky.social

This is accurate & not hyperbole from @jfallows.bsky.social With support from USAID, the DRC had built an outbreak preparedness & response system “ready to go,” e.g., surveillance, labs, health workers, & stockpiles of personal protective equipment When Musk killed USAID, that system collapsed 😢

the phrase "lipstick on a pig" has always inspired a deep sadness in me. I think of the pig, looking forward to her big night out, and I bring myself to the verge of tears.

I typically decide what I want to eat for myself instead of outsourcing my most basic decision-making to a machine that cannot think

Withdrawing NSF graduate fellowships is cruel & shortsighted. These fellowships are highly competitive & give top students the choice to attend the institution that best serves their needs & interests. Withdrawing fellowships just because students chose to go to Harvard infringes on their freedom.😢😡

All NSF GRFPs to students choosing to attend Harvard in the Fall were just terminated

Fentanyl deaths are up by 50 percent in San Francisco after Mayor Lurie replaced harm reduction programs with police and prisons. It's almost like you put lives in danger when you treat a public health problem like it's a crime 48hills.org/2025/05/fent...

It's a weird world where the shittier a piece of software looks, the more I trust it. The fancy looking ones? They're going to steal my data or extort me in pricing or just not work. Crappy looking tools made by some random dude? This shit is going to get the job done and do nothing else.

Scientists at UT, in recent years, have developed - a way to store the COVID vaccine for shipping and remote use so they don’t spoil so quickly - a handheld mass spectrometer pen that detects cancer during surgery to a *cell-by-cell level* And these projects were federally-funded.
