I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

A fantastic thread that really highlights the many, many obstacles we have to overcome even within our own party.

Matthew Sheffield@matthew.flux.community

🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

People mention LLMs a lot in terms of "increasing accessibility" And as someone with intermittent cognitive disabilities, I *really* want to highlight how much work it is to sort through AI slop to try to find accurate information

James Baillie@jubalbarca.bsky.social

The main way the LLM boom has affected my life is to make a lot of things so much harder. It makes information filtering an even more constant grinding process than it already was: it's noticeably worsened search info quality and makes it harder to find anything reliable and/or human and/or real.

Yeah I think it's a combination of the Internet, the election of Trump (twice), and the institutional retreat from defending anyone who isn't a white male. I'm certain there's other factors that I haven't considered as well.

Micah@rincewind.run

like most things my intuition is that the internet has made this worse - more parents have gone down some awful social media rabbit hole these days to the point that their children feel like they need to cut them off so, of course, they complain about it in the newspaper

The one "free speech absolutionist" I have seen post a comment today decided to use the moment to decry Congress requiring Zuckerberg to testify about the suspension. I did not see a single post warning about the dangers of these corporations suppressing the free speech of the protestors.

As a programmer myself, this is both so sad and also hysterical. GTFO with this weak shit.

Rock Paper Shotgun@rockpapershotgun.bsky.social

"We vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher" because "programming is hard", announce company we're somehow supposed to see as a serious Steam competitor https://bit.ly/4hMHbi5

So I find this thread absolutely fascinating because my experience has been the exact opposite. Virtually none of the AI-generated code works. Our code review times have drastically increased because of how much broken code needs to be fixed, and there are tons of security issues too.

Micah@rincewind.run

"I will not touch anything with ai-generated code" is going to mean, in pretty short order, "I will not touch software" this is just functionally what software development is now and it's only going to accelerate from here

I don't think Micah is lying, to be clear. It's just that what he is describing is nothing at all like I've seen or heard (I've worked in the financial and defense industries). In fact, our executive team had to stress just today that we are not to use Claude or Copilot for any sort of coding.

Hard not to notice that Democrats who are doing the best are the ones who are leaving this whole civility-and-norms, we-go-high, we-need-a-strong-Republican-Party bullshit behind and are simply giving Republicans exactly what they all ought to get at all times, which is undisguised contempt.

The financial costs alone that are required to use this tech are extremely high, & the fact of the matter is that the cases where the tech is actually useful are highly specific & not very profitable. That's before the ethical questions, legal ramifications, & outside costs are factored in.

New: I pulled the Character ai bankruptcy documents. They show: - They were spending $14 million/month on compute alone at a time their revenue was around ~$1 million/month - Currently losing $9 million a month - They admitted they enshittified & that it didnt work www.404media.co/character-ai...

Yep, well said! The constant drumbeat of hate and vitriol I saw on a regular basis there made leaving pretty easy. I've had no desire to return, and the constant whining from certain individuals about how people should go back has reinforced that lack of desire.

I left X because it wasn't Twitter anymore. It was a platform for Nazi white supremacists run by a nazi white supremacist.

That director, and whoever above them gave them that directive, needs to be fired and blacklisted from the industry.

NEW: Epic Games has delayed its upcoming (not yet announced) Star Wars + Marvel shooter as it pivots to complete AI game development. "No more hand-written code," a director told staff. All art "generated with full AI workflows." Full scoop: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

"Instead of doomscrolling when I'm sad, I'm just gonna play instead." 70 hours of playtime in 2 weeks I don't know if I'm supposed to look at it positively, since I'm having fun instead of just being sad. But looking at it negatively, a significant chunk of my day is spent on just being sad.

Professor Jean Twenge searching for the cause:

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis. “It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”

While it may seem unnecessary to many of you, today seems like a good day to remind everyone that Trans Rights Are Human Rights and the trans community will always have my axe.

Democrats better learn quickly that they must stand for the people, all of the people, not just the people that Independents don't think are icky, all of the people and all of their civil rights. Or, they can become the American Labour party.

The Humanist Report@humanistreport.bsky.social

Democrats will never learn.
