Imagine if the California state government created a software consortium to make online apps and educational games.

Americans who went to school in the 90s: did you play Oregon Trail? Did EVERYONE play Oregon Trail? I keep seeing it come up and wonder if it was truly that prevalent

Clever, Granicus, Infinite Campus, IXL, Parent Square, … The average California municipality or school district is paying for so much subpar software and that's before you even get to Google/Microsoft/Zoom.

I've gotten into arguments with ecologists here and elsewhere about the contribution of human land management to biodiversity and ecosystem function. Many people believe that people=bad news, I think the story is much more complicated, and this new paper provides strong support for my view

The science research institute that would likely receive $4.2 billion in public taxpayer money if voters approve Proposition 38 this November had only three employees as of last month — far fewer than the 51 staffers it planned to have hired by last year. cal.news/4shghlR 📸 Brian van der Brug

Maybe this is AI, but I feel like you should be able to put together more than one complete sentence if you're running for school board.

Just going to go out on a limb and say Sophia Cyris (SSF district 3 candidate) doesn't have a very good "affordable homes" policy section.

Also a little ironic that the bottom of her "for voters" section starts off with "This section is about your experience as a South San Francisco homeowner."

"almost no metabolic genes or pathways" is wild.

I generally don't think "citizens advisory boards" do a lot, but it's fun that SamTrans is so poorly run *and* its CAC members are writing the ballot arguments against Proposition RTM (emergency transit revenue measure).

Thank you, South San Francisco Library for inviting me to read LUNA AND THE CASE OF THE MISSING MOONCAKES for Mid-Autumn Festival and to everyone who turned up. It was super fun meeting such an engaging Asian community!

ah yeah here he comes, big donny t

Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.

To be clear, Mina Richardson is the worst elected official in SSF and you should absolutely vote for him if you can, but I wish the Bay Area WFP people didn't hop around quite so much.

What is the point of this grandstanding about "slowing" AI progress? China's not slowing progress. If anyone actually believes this is an issue outside the freaks at Anthropic, maybe the government could do something practical like invest in cybersecurity instead?

Last week I joined with other leading AI-focused state legislators to call on the AI labs to slow the pace of development until research on AI safety, alignment, and transparency can catch up. These systems are advancing alarmingly quickly,

I realize SF built the new Skyline Watershed Ridge Trail, but it feels very Atherton/Woodside coded to dedicate a third of the parking lot for horse trailers.

LGTMing the "name update" pull request, but rolling my eyes so everyone knows it doesn't actually look good.

“Everyone considers it fucking nuts.” Inside Apple, I'm told "not a soul" supports Donald Trump's Lake Ontario rebrand to "Lake America," but the company is also resigned to making such concessions to avoid the White House's rage. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/apple-maps...

There used to be a website (something-waffle?) that tracked every channel Law & Order was syndicated on and when so you could watch L&O for twelve hours a day. Every trace has completely disappeared from the Internet though?

And if you missed it... That was it! You might never see it again unless you got lucky when did they reruns during the summer or happened to set up a VCR to record it or years later in syndication bsky.app/profile/thel...

I started a marine biogeochemistry podcast, where I ask scientists questions about the cycling of elements through the ocean. This is a place where we can nerd it out, for scientists and marine science students. Listen here, or spotify/apple podcasts applied-marine-biogeochemistry.org/podcast/

🚨I am obsessed with the sociology of GLP-1 drugs, to medicate outside medicine. These are effective & heavy drugs, most arent getting them via a GP, people figure it out on Reddit, together, for better or worse. I try to mine and expose that struggle in an interactive, ever updating dynamic article.

Wonder what everyone's doing 3 months later? I cancelled Claude Code after they started using xAI servers, but I have a couple personal projects I'd like to play with now and there are way too many options outside Claude/Codex/Antigravity.

Struggling to find a good bells-and-whistles open harness though; tried out Goose and I'm not super impressed. Pi seems a little too bare bones. Maybe Opencode? Or should I take another look at Aider (last time I used it with much simpler models)?

Is there a good OMR (optical music recognition) flow out there? It seems like the existing ones are all kind of outdated (tried Audiveris and I needed to do a lot of touchup) and newer general models I've tried like Opus 4.6/Gemini 3/etc do poorly.

I bet if you showed up with a polo shirt that said "pool remediation services" and a bunch of four liter bottles labelled "peroxide", you could pour as much BG-11 into the reflecting pool as you wanted.

Here's a streambed simulator I threw together in Claude to play around with (couldn't get the formulation quite right) and it has the same dark mode feel with monospace font, a single accent color, rounded boxes with not-full width dividers, etc.

My laptop's too old to run anything larger than 4B so I spent $40 on OpenRouter to try out different models. Hy3-preview seems pretty good (and super cheap), but going to take a look at GLM/Qwen/Kimi too.
