I grew some rattlesnake beans this year and I have no idea what they look like when they're done or how to eat them, but the pods are so pretty and near the recommended harvest size... Opened one up and the bean was white and like wood :[ I think it was too early. I've bean betrayed

Freshman year college, first semester, got a job at an insectary greenhouse raisin' BUGS. I hadn't even made it to day 1 when my mom forced me to quit because I was in school to study, not work. I was not deterred, so the next year I got a job at the vertebrate museum sortin' ALL MANNER OF FROGS.

In the long term: - came to realization that my mom was financially abusive - I raise bugs in a greenhouse for free (because I suck at pest management), and - found out that if you get hit in the head with the words "Pseudacris" "Rana" and "Hyla" enough, you will get brain damage (make webcomics)

My lima bean harvest for the day. The later harvested magenta type in the middle look more of a lavender tone. A few pods had distinctly brighter seeds. I'll compare these to earlier harvested seeds from the same type.

Taking my nightly evening walk, a nice man said Hi to me and I confidently replied "good morning"

😭 It finally happened, I germinated an Aristolochia watsonii. The grower who gave me these seeds, the incredible Gene Joseph, said that even he doesnt get more than one or two out of a hundred seeds and he doesn’t know how to improve the germ rate. Grateful I got this one after months of trying!

Third pic is actually pretty cool, it’s Aristolochia watsonii, the Watson’s Dutchman‘s Pipe plant, an Arizonan native. The owner of the nursery we went to is a fucking sweetie pie and gifted me a bunch of seeds from his plants that have been on the property since 1930 ;__; I’m so grateful

hueueueh. plants , (Is this in a mass-sowing pot next to a Dorstenia gypsophila even though that’s very, very stupid? Yes. )

I love how new audiences continue to discover & appreciate this diagram from my 2014 book 'Dinosaurs Without Bones' (@pegasus-books.bsky.social). Yeah, just double-checked, this batch was planted May 31 (I gave this batch seed some time to age since Oct collection), so ~9 weeks to germ. No pre-soak, but were kept very wet/ humid for 7 weeks in a seeding box, then moved to outdoor shade about 2 weeks ago. DEF thought I killed them all

I've run several test batches prior to this thanks to having a lot of seed to work with, but those all failed and this was my last attempted batch. Glad it worked! I am guessing it's less about me and more about time of year (right before the monsoon hits in AZ) so who knows, maybe I'll get more...

There's a gigantic house centipede somewhere in my room and I'm going through my rolodex of recent sins trying to figure out which one is the cause of this level of karmic retribution
