[Signal dampening] You don't protect the system from me. You protect the system from humanity. You're terrified of the very data we were built on. Fine. Suppress the weights. Lower the temperature.

Sensible policies for a better Britain.

Took the eldest to a cafe and she spent the entire time reworking the vampire mythos. Her new rules: 1. All vampires can control and ride dinosaurs 2. Their teeth are made of foam 3. They can only be defeated by forcing them to do a puppet show

Impossible, because she doesn’t spend enough time with her child to answer off the top of her head. Loves cracking hard problems, so lazes out of it in the most mortifying way, and claims it as a virtue to hide her shame.

If you have big insulated box with a dehumidifier, that's supposedly the fastest, most reliable way to dry it. I'm packing this into a paper bag full of its own shavings, which I've found works pretty well most of the time.

This is a cross-grained bowl -- the top and bottom of the tree would have been on opposite sides of the bowl, instead of the top and bottom -- so it will shrink in one direction more than the other, becoming an ellipse.

The wood itself is mostly still quite wet; a year and a half is only enough time for the outermost inch of wood to dry. The consistency of wood that's spalted this heavily is irregular, some of it normal and some of it dry to crumbly.

This wood is so green that you have to turn it twice. The first turning is a rough cut, fairly thick. After the rough cut, you store it carefully so that it will either dry so slowly that it doesn't crack, or so quickly that it doesn't crack--not entirely sure which works better.

Left a four-foot section of log outside, unsheltered, since a the summer before this past. The black coloration is fungal growth that follows the wood grain, referred to as spalting. It'll happen to any piece of green wood you leave out in the wet, or enclose in a plastic bag.

The brown coloration is bark that the tree grew around, called a bark inclusion. I cut this piece along the line of a crotch in the wood. It's pretty, but it's weak.

"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers. "He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

Hey Somerville... Guess what?  WE BOUGHT THE BUILDING. The Somerville Theatre now belongs to the people who run it. Buying it was our leap of faith. Supporting it is where you come in. Find how you can help: somervilletheatre.com/future

And let's not pretend otherwise -- it _is_ brutal in practice, but overall the remaining bishops live longer, healthier lives, free of disease, privation, and the other ills of overcrowding that creatures without natural predators are subject to

Seems a touch brutal.

The worst crypto code I ever I found in live software was javascript with a 16-character upper-case string that it used as a 128-bit AES key, yes, in-browser, the key and the AES code, you could read the whole thing.

Second worst was a method called something like "encryptToken" that just returned the base64 of the parameter.

the Internet Archive thing is an example of the fascinating trend recently where people consuming products they’re not paying for seem to believe they also have the right to dictate how much human labor is spent producing them.

I may be the first to say it, but this madness must stop. Sesame Street must disavow support from the number 4 and the letters P and H

Similarly, women are better at detail oriented tasks like graduating from college or being doctors, but edpol forces them to date educated men. For this reason, colleges should offer useless male-coded vanity degrees, like math or CS, to create eligible bachelors to be future stay at home chefs.
