Science isn’t about new tech Science is about innovative thinking & robust investigative approaches New tech might help, but so might traditional methods - depending on the question

I want to know more about the de-funding of the NSF social science directorate.

J. Nathan Matias@natematias.bsky.social

This release of Meta documents is a deeply shocking look at how tech tries to steer & control science. It's normal for crisis comms teams to ask how to counter scientists who criticize their employers. But here's what's especially shocking in these docs: cailinoconnor.substack.com/p/its-now-of...

NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

wired.comA 28-Year-Old DOGE Operative Gutted USAID. HR Had No Record of Him Working ThereDespite the agency's human resources department saying he hadn’t even been onboarded, Jeremy Lewin oversaw the destruction of USAID. It’s not clear he had the legal authority to do so.

It has been AWFUL for many of my clients. This is an impossible task to therapy your way out of.

NEW: "It’s been hell." "I’m dead inside." "I honestly don’t know if I will ever find work in the U.S. again, let alone D.C." "It’s akin to screaming into a void." What is going on with D.C.'s job market? Contributor Abi Newhouse investigated:

Like Talarico, I would, through my late dad, be an 8th generation Texan if I had been born there instead of DC. I was talking with my mom last night about how my ancestors produced a state that has done so much harm to so many.

The Christian Science Monitor@csmonitor.bsky.social

Texas Democrats have long dreamed of flipping Texas, only to come up short in major races. This year’s Senate race tests how deep the pull toward conservatism runs in a state that’s often been a model for national Republican priorities. #texas #senate #talarico www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics...

I think Talarico has the TX secret sauce with his professed religious allegiance at the same time that I loathe the underlying lack of separation of religion and state, but I can't put my finger on what about him reads as so authentic.

My gosh, look at that star field.

Meet our Solar System's newest dwarf planet candidate: 2026 ED138! Orbiting past Pluto, scientists found it in NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory data from earlier this year. Early analysis suggests it's ~600–1500 km across, one of the largest found past Neptune!🔭🧪 🔗: rubinobservatory.org/news/rubin-f...

Shout out to my recently-adopted CASPCA buddy, grouchypants Bill Nye, wherever you are. I wish Italy and I could have shared our home with you.

Today is National Black Cat Day 🐈‍⬛ , which raises awareness about how hard it is for black cats to get adopted from shelters & dispels the superstitions that still surround them. 🐈‍⬛ In their honor, I give you some black cats in ancient art & archaeological sites. www.americanhumane.org/public-educa...

These cats will break into any closed compartment, including your freezer, and also defend you against intruders; don't be fooled by their innocent demeanor.

Imagine having the mandibular bite strength to carry a pumpkin that size in your jaws. Anyway, go big kitties!

Ralphs Food for Less Mariano’s Smith’s Harris Teeter Kroger ALREADY owns all these grocery stores. Now, Kroger wants to buy Giant Eagle too. Less competition could mean higher grocery costs for YOU. Donald Trump shouldn't just rubber-stamp this merger.

THIS!!! It's as if their memories of two years ago have just evaporated. Americans on the whole have astonishingly shallow memories.

Thinking about the argument from convenience for LLMs & related technologies in the context of a paper I'm working on. And how people might say, "Without [software], it would take to long to ___" My usual reaction to this has been: What did you do four years ago? >>

I have students who will now immediately and openly drop a class if the professor uses or encourages AI. They do not want it. They know it lies. Colleagues, please. Stop this. You fail us all by brain rotting on this slop.

A bone in Chile dated to pre-Columbian times would prove Polynesians reached the Americas before Europeans. There is controversy over the radiocarbon dating: if the chicken ate fish, it might appear to have lived earlier than it actually did (the "marine effect"). 🐓📚

Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

Locals, should you like to know more... ❤️

@heinrich.senate.gov please change your position and support and protect Section 106. Respect Tribal sovereignty and the input of local communities. As a NM Democrat, I am so disappointed in you. Section 106 is so important to protecting the Cultural Heritage of our state.
