People who call the polio vaccine a "fraud" are not "skeptics" toward vaccines, they are people with fixed views toward vaccines! (The name for that fixed view is "denial.")

loved both the original story here (a defector subscriber close-reading a pair of blogs with their 7th grade class) and giri's email about sportswriting as mana for the emergent fanatic. reading and discussing things with others is beautiful. try it with defector for $1: defector.com/products

good morning, as you all know, IRL i'm a 7th grade english teacher, constantly trying to convince the kids that reading is cool. I was going to do some short stories, but instead today, I'm inspired by these 2 defector pieces to do sports writing.... anyone seen anything else great on that game?
high praise from someone whose web site is an authority on walking around and looking at stuff

This piece by @albertburneko.bsky.social is so damn good. It's specifically about creative or journalistic writing, but it's absolutely about music writing too. Felt this in a big way. It's a must-read.

i really like this one and think i'm on the same wavelength as mayor mark about the places we live: they are usually cruel and brutal, deserve (most of) the jokes made at their expense, but nonetheless capable of real (if sporadic) beauty

an ancillary benefit of working at defector is getting to tail my colleagues' recommendations for other stuff to read. each edition of the newsletter will also include some of those recommendations. let kelsey, brandy, and guests sprinkle you some game: subscribe-forms.beehiiv.com/5aa07d55-9de...
IMO: thanks primarily to brandy, israel, and kelsey, defector has grown into "Defector, but for Culture." i get why it happens, but it bugs me that we get pigeonholed as "a sports site." we publish a ton of excellent arts & culture stuff! this newsletter will collect and highlight that work.
