This is quite interesting, I'd really stopped thinking about the big macro variables, so I was really surprised to learn how low the deficit is (far too low in my view).

New post: The Big Picture for the forthcoming UK Budget that the media largely ignores mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-... Because of tax rises already set in place, as well as recent data and current plans, the UK has the strongest 'fiscal credibility' of all the G7 economies.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Hearing report after report. Bolsonaro’s allies are doing everything they can to suppress the vote. It’s the engine of fascism in action.

Grim stories from Brazil. Indigenous voters going to the city a day early because they don’t trust their state not to cut off their travel routes on election day: www.instagram.com/reel/De4z6kP... - while many flights to the north east, a pro-Lula region, have been cancelled without explanation.

Fixing small stuff is good, but it feels like there should just be regulators that just do this kind of stuff.

"Debate" has been corrupted by codifying it into a competitive sport imo; at this point it is rarely a method for good faith actors to hit upon best solutions or refine a shared reality; it's mostly a vector for bad faith actors to keep failed and destructive ideas in perpetual zombie currency.

Olúfẹ́mi O. TÑíwò@olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started

This sounds like nonsense. Was Russia influencing Boris Johnson's early 90s EU stories? Was Jake Goldsmith's referendum party a Russian op. British Tories had always hated the EU. Russian influence was a much lower order thing.

Scott Horton@robertscotthorton.bsky.social

Brexit was a successful influence operation run by the Russian intelligence services, and it has taken the British political world more than a decade to digest this simple fact. Now it's important to focus on the fact that Nigel Farage was little more than their willing agent in the process.

Was listening to Thomas Frank talk about his new book The Creativity Con this morning, was kind of appropriate.

Chancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics live

theguardian.comChancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics liveJohn Healey is expected to cut red tape requirements, particularly for smaller businesses Good morning. A week today John Healey, the chancellor, will be doing a media round defending the budget he is presenting on Wednesday next week. Ahead of that, he has given an interview to Patrick Maguire from the Times. As you would expect, there is no real detail in it about the measures he will be presenting to MPs. But the big picture message is very clear – and quite surprising, coming from a chancellor serving a PM who in some respects is steering left compared to his predecessor. Healey says that he wants to be on the side of bloody-minded entrepreneurs who make a profit, he acknowledges that government has made their life harder over the past two years, and he suggests that cutting the β€˜cost of living’ for business is just as important as cutting the real cost of living for families. In the quote that gives the Times its splash headline, Healey says: I want to be a chancellor who backs business in Britain making a profit, and those entrepreneurs who, in the end, are the ones who challenge the status quo, come up with innovative ideas and are trying, some of them through sheer bloody-mindedness, to keep going through these sorts of pressures … If you’re not making a profit, you’ve got nothing to put back into the business. And for the people who start up these businesses, the ones who really thrive and grow, they have to make a profit β€” and they will be much more inclined to put it back into their own business. But we want it to grow here and stay here. If you talk to any of the businesses that have come in and have either had one-to-ones or round tables with me, I have recognised that in recent times there’s been a lot of pressure: employment law, regulation, tax, input costs, supply chains. And so when I talk about the cost of business, and recognising that in the same way as we’re recognising the cost of living pressures, I’m conscious of that as I go into the budget for both businesses and households. [Healey] is expected to use the budget to make significant cuts to regulation on businesses that one senior Treasury source described as β€œthe sludge choking firms”. Reporting requirements are likely to be abolished for many smaller enterprises, The Times understands. Continue reading...

Burnham is the same horrible cynical politics of Starmer in a slightly more presentable package. Kicking this deal into the long grass and then going ahead with it once Holborn & St Pancras is safely out of the way. Opportunistic, cynical and corrupt

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

Everything I hear about this makes it sound like Rachel is massively misrepresenting what happened here. Our media is utterly rotten and complicit in genocide.

Rachel Cunliffe@rmcunliffe.bsky.social

I don’t normally post media appearances, but this feels like an exception. On Politics Live today I’d planned to discuss Green Party infighting after the Zionism motion, entryism, Labour’s response. That kinda thing. It ended up with… well, you’ll see. Final segment. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

Martin Abram's speech to full council last night about his experiences as a Jewish man facing antisemitism, the dangers of turning antisemitism into a political football, and our drive to make Lambeth a borough of sanctuary and solidarity for all – no hatred used to divide us!

Isn't this the person who traded a plastic bag tax for benefit cuts? Not sure they should be lecturing on good policy.

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Yes, this is how we wound up with Mandelson’s Labour winning power on a platform of pure bullshit and drivel, with secretly agreed plans to scythe benefits and crack down on everyone the Sun hates, which swiftly disgusted and repelled the public.

I'd add that this understates the extent of the support for the motion more generally. Most voters have an understanding of this motion filtered through a very hostile press.

🚨 BOMBSHELL POLL JUST DROPPED 🚨 Green voters SUPPORT "Zionism is Racism" motion. βœ… Support: 81% ❌ Oppose: 19% (Source: @OpiniumResearch, 7-9 October)

I remember hearing this "welfare dependency" viewpoint from my dad, who was born in the 1940s. It's old as the hills bullshit designed to justify the poor staying poor by blaming them for their own condition.

Frances Ryan@francesryan.bsky.social

β€œWelfare has become an economic opiate,” the Centre for Social Justice says today in a landmark report on Britain’s β€œworklessness crisis.” Which is funny because I only had to start taking codeine when I got chronically ill? You’re almost there, lads! Just join some dots!

I find "lack of leadership" a massive tell here. It's a nonsense phrase, it means nothing but you can lob it into the discourse like a hand grenade when the press stir up controversy.

Polanski failed to show leadership over Zionism motion, ex-Green leader says Caroline Lucas tells the BBC Zack Polanski should have taken part in a vote on a motion declaring Zionism a form of racism.
