But fundamentally having a republic of laws and equal citizens is more important than the marginal tax rate and also MAGA has stupid ideas about taxes too. So save the republic first, argue about the marginal tax rate later.

Mamdani is the smartest political actor in America right now because he does things that improve people's everyday lives and then TELLS EVERYBODY ABOUT IT. And when he's going through a process to get things done, he fucking explains it to people. Basic shit, you'd think.

These candidates are winning with Democrats because the corporate centrist weakling approach has repeatedly failed to deliver the programs we hoped we were voting for. We wanted Mamdanis and got Schumers and Merrick Garlands and it sucks. The voters are not wrong. The party has failed us.

Jaime Harrison@jaimeharrison.bsky.social

I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination. Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.

Did you know it's possible to be Jewish *and* strongly oppose this Israeli government? In fact I would say it is an obligation. "Never again" doesn't mean just about Jews, but *everyone*. #Zachor

A far-right member of Israel’s governing coalition on Friday said that “All of Lebanon must burn,” as fighting broke out between Israel and the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah despite a ceasefire imposed by the U.S. thehill.com/policy/inter...

The act of delivering ordnance itsrlf is not victory. War is the use of concerted violence to force your adversary to do your bidding. Iran has not been forced to do anything. That isn't what happened here. It's important that people understand that.

This is correct and this is what the US system needs to evolve towards.

He really would be far happier as a ceremonial head of state like the German President or Canadian Governor-General than anybody who has to do stuff related to the government.

He started a war for no damn reason. It's good and just that he lost. However, given how he and his cultists fancy themselves the roughest, toughest, manliest he-men around, it is also satisfying and fitting to roast them as losing losers who completely fucking lost.

The timing today suggests they clearly wanted to be able to say "We released the details to the media before signing, what's the problem?" but also wanted it signed before they had to take any real heat for the details in the 14 points.

Under-discussed in all of this is the simple truth that Trump respects those who fight back (and has total contempt for those who don't). The Iranians fought back. Not just once, but repeatedly over several tests. They earned his respect. Not to oversimplify, but a lot of this is for that reason.

It is a consistant problem that rural communities -- speaking broadly -- tend to be somewhat resentful and reactionary. The perpetual question of any progressive project (to say nothing of revolutionary!) is how to get them either on side or at least quiescent

In fact it's effectively impossible to be both wealthy and happy. (Except in a small set of cases where you inherit the wealth.) The things you have to do to be wealthy are incompatible with being happy.

Will is taking the position here that roads are bad.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Yes? Roads, especially large roads, are a massive hazard and nuisance, and generally quite bad for the people who live near them. In addition to forming physical barriers and producing tons of noise, roads also produce a lot more toxic emissions, runoff, etc., than most data centers, too.

"Efficiency" does seem to be the rallying cry of an elite class which values wealth mongering over healthy communities and a happy populace.

So today's notable polls showed Sherrod Brown up by 8 and Platner up by 4, and the consensus reaction was basically that Brown is set up right while Platner is screwed. Am I summarizing that right? Seems like a lot of weight being put on a very small 4-point difference.

Honestly Steyer should use his money to buy up legacy media assets in California and turn them into a West Coast liberal version of what Murdoch, Bezos and the Ellisons have done. Would have more long-run impact than running for office.

I mean I've just got to push back a little because honestly our experience with police has been entirely different than what you're implying. We live in an area where serious crimes occur pretty regularly. Every time we've needed police help, they've been extremely helpful.

This is not true. They absolutely have control. In some cases they are afraid to exercise the control, but that does not mean they don't have it. It's just a matter of being willing to use their powers.
