There is something terribly wrong about an economy that produces its first trillionaire, but cannot provide health care for its people. Or one in which the richest handful of families have the combined wealth of almost forty percent of the rest of the country.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Elon Musk’s net worth of $1.1 trillion is five million times as large as that of the typical family. The median American household had a net worth of just under $200,000 in 2022, the year with the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. nyti.ms/4aL8sNH

Trump does not think strategically, historically, geographically, or even rationally. He does not connect actions he takes on one day to events that occur weeks later. Allied leaders know that if they help him in the Gulf, he won't be grateful, or even remember www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

A year ago we were supposed to be getting $2,000 rebate checks, DOGE was going to find $2 trillion in waste to balance the budget, we were going to pay no income taxes because tariffs would pay for everything, gas and home electric bills would be cut in half, and no new wars.

Amazing. Speed limits now.

The red dot is a baby North Atlantic right whale trying to migrate up the east coast of the United states. The blue streaks are fast moving shipping vessels entering and leaving New York City harbor. One collision and the whale is dead. We need *mandatory* speed limits for these vessels! 🧪🦑🌍

Patriotism doesn’t mean white people saluting the flag, it means being being good enough to make people want to come here and strong enough to take care of everyone who does.

Geology is not boring!

This is Angel Falls in Venezuela, with its 807-metre sheer plunge - the tallest waterfall on our planet. Except - it isn't. There's one that's bigger. MUCH bigger. And when I learned about it this week, my mind was fully blown. OK. Buckle up! (Especially if you don't have a head for heights.) 1/

Trump 2017: "It is my pleasure and my honor to announce my nomination of Jerome Powell." Trump today: "He's a terrible Fed chair. I was surprised he was appointed. I was surprised frankly that Biden put him in and extended him." Every news story will include both clips, right?

This is fascinating/weird/scary

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

LOL

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

I feel like we need to form a League of Relatively Normal People, and our agenda should be things like: --Canada's cool, leave them be --Lot of smart people at universities, that's a plus --We're scared of getting cancer, so let's research it --Fewer floods and wildfires would be nice

This (very long) thread is America. This is what we do.

So we’re here now. Our PTA board (remember, we’re a PTA, HAHAHAHHAHA) knows now that this, whatever this is, will extend for a long time, and we will keep it going through this cursed presidency. We can’t unsee the needs we have seen after the fire passes, whenever that may be.

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last. Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

Just a quick note to those new here, if you think someone's post is worth other people reading, repost it. Liking it does not have the same effect here as on the dead-bird site. There is no algorithm. That's one of the reasons we like it.

This is my good boy Loki. He's fearful, leash aggressive, and untrustworthy off lead. He has a strong prey drive and, although he's a mutt, obviously has some guard dog breed in him. The first few years with him were tough. It never once occurred to me to have him put down for being the dog he is.

Substitute "wife", and same.

Popehat@kenwhite.bsky.social

I have socialized and been affable like a good husband and reached my limit of human interaction and retreated to a corner with a drink and the dog that the hosts have thoughtfully provided. Dogs at parties are the introvert’s friend. Much better than potted plants or bookcases.

You are up to date.
