My telco keeps sending me updates for an internet outage at my place when it is still on and their outage search page doesn’t show an outage at my address. Lovely work, champs

Sooner or later someone was going to see that slide that a computer should not make a management decision because it cannot be accountable and think that sounded like a good idea.

I had to download an app yesterday and am still worried whether I missed a '1' replacing a 'l' in the address bar of the ostensibly reputable site I downloaded it from. I hate a lot of things about the modern world.

The reason they do this rather than pursue taxes the rich and companies dodge is that those groups can afford to lawyer up, where recipients of benefits often cannot. That there is no effective limitation period on these 'recoveries' is also unconscionable.

As someone who covered Robodebt in part, it's clear nothing has really changed. Worse: the politics of federal Labor on social security are baffling. We keep hearing about how people have "lost trust in institutions". Wiping these debts seem a simple answer to help. Instead, they rewrote the rules.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Let me tell you a story about the politics of Australia: Over the last 28 years generally, but over the last decade particularly, I've done a lot of politics outside of Australia. Last week, an organisation I work with called me in for a meeting mostly among people like me around the world /n

The Australian newspaper has been claiming a "forensic audit report" shows BoM's temperature data has "widespread error". For 15 years climate sceptics have been claiming a conspiracy around the data. Is anything different this time?

Requiring everybody to use their full real name & location in all public comments would make a lot of women way more unsafe. So many men-commentators on 'society' don't consider that women often don't have the freedoms they take for granted. www.smh.com.au/national/i-b...

Just on the original point, LinkedIn is the purest example of what happens if you dictate people use 'real' identifiers in social media: a homogenous environment where only vice-signalling seems to cut through that homogeneity.

But another privileged, older guy had the idea (that was totally novel and has not been suggested before), so their feeling that it would be better has more value than this *research* bsky.app/profile/wand...

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

This is a good, balanced, summary of what we are seeing at the moment. It does make me wonder how much longer software as a service has left as viable business model.

I have a lot of respect for a lot of journalists trying to make sense of this week’s events. But what I’ve mainly taken away from the bulk of the analysis is how out of touch most of our media and political class are with the lives of ordinary people

Also, the UFU's website's 'NO CORRUPTION FOUND' tickers has people asking a lot of questions already answered by the ticker.

I gave a short opinion on something yesterday. It was one of those things where it was helpful to go into a lot of detail while working through my thinking. Ultimately, I didn't use a lot of that detail and said instead 'I think x is the case. Let me know if you want details why."

I'm feeling unjustifiably smug about this. I'm sure this is just sensible but it has taken me 25 years of practice to make things easier for myself like this.

Usually, I would have had either given the really long, really detailed answer first off and risked the client didn't want it; or given the short answer and deleted the working out, so when the client wanted the lot, would have had to start again. This is progress.

My one complaint about this site is the devs talking to each otehr using words - usually names of products - that are just close enough to real words in other contexts to cause normies, like me, confusion.

I mean, there was just someone talking about a security vulnerability in 'Railway'. This creates a lexicological uncanny valley for me where I have to work out is this something that I should understand before realising it is not.

The difference from all the other times I have done something like this is that, this time, I cut and pasted the bits I didn't use into a new document, instead of deleting them. So when the inevitable request for more detail came today, I could use that.

For those seeing that article about the driver "passing too close" to cyclists. This is what "passing too close" looks like in the particular circumstances.
