And to anyone who is driven to make others’ lives more full of discovery and joy and meaning: You are always important. Thank you for helping to make the world a better place.

AI can crunch numbers, analyze data, and do other computer shit in ways that can genuinely help the world, and instead of that people want to sell you on the idea that it can love your children and make art better than you can and friends, they are lying to you.

Anyway I think this stuff is what we should do for all children all the time. Adaptations should layer on top of material and emotional well-being. Feed the kids. bsky.app/profile/kiss...

10:1 student-teacher ratio, free food, later start times (and free childcare), triple the chances to play and move, no grades till high school, well-paid teachers and aides. Offer tutoring and quiet library time as needed. Now you have twice as many kids who can focus, so you can try some things.

Finding and befriending clever, thoughtful people is miraculously easier.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

In undergrad I had to come to class on percocet for a week and my fave religious studies prof was like “sorry about the broken knee but can we get you to come to seminar like this all term“

In college, I’d eat an entire full-size Cinnabon, with extra frosting, in one sitting. I was a different kind of creature then.

LLMs also have a middle-class bias, in addition to all their other biases. Young working-class people consulting AI for career advice may not realize that.

If you give wolf a cookie, it wolfs the cookie. Teach a fish to wolf, it wolfs for a lifetime. Teach a cookie to fish, it lifetimes the wolf. Life a teach to fish time a cookie the wolf.

There are two wolves, a trolley, and infinite monkeys. They want you to buy this shirt. Get it for the local philosopher, linguist, or meme-sharer. Baffle your family and friends. This shirt does not scrute. danielsolis.threadless.com/designs/ther... #WeeklyTshirt #philosophy #linguistics

One controls the lever of a trolley track... on Men's T-Shirt – Baffle your friends with every thought experiment, moral allegory, high-brow meme, and philosophy reference fire-hosed onto one inscrutable shirt. "There are two wolves. One always lies. One controls the lever of trolley track. They are in a state of superposition inside a box. Infinite monkeys at infinite typewriters are riding the trolley, going to a hotel with an infinite number of rooms. First, the trolley must travel halfway, but before that a quarter way, and so on. One wolf is “Kiki.” The other is “Bouba.” One salivates at the ringing of a bell. One wolf waits because it is promised two treats later. This bodes well for the more patient wolf’s future. One wolf is otherwise benevolent, but will punish anyone who knew of the box’s potential existence and did not directly contribute to its creation. That said, every part of this box has been replaced, so it may not be the same box from the beginning of the experiment. The box falls in the forest, but no experimenter is around to record the results. Wolves can see only shadows projected on the inner walls of the box, believing them to be reality. One obeys the experimenter’s orders to administer electric shocks to the monkey conducting the trolley. In truth, the conductor is actually an actor working on behalf of the experimenters. One wolf reports that a dress is black and blue. This is incorrect. The wolf is red/green colorblind. One of the infinite monkeys is able to imitate natural language writing well enough that one wolf cannot distinguish whether a transcript’s writer is a monkey or wolf. The transcript: “If one wolf testifies against the other, but the other does not, the one testifying will be set free from the box while the other remains.” One wolf cuts off all of its fur for money to buy a pocket watch as a Christmas present for the other wolf. However, that wolf has no pockets, nor can it read a clock, because it is a wolf. This is irony. One wolf chases the sun. One wolf chases the moon."

Above an impossible knot, a sword hangs from a thread. The thread trails through a china shop at the center of which a bull watches a bear open Door #2, revealing a fox. Behind the other two doors are a chicken and corn. The bull must decide whether to switch its choice to Door #3. Read the thread.

When you’re looking at a picture in an iPhone photo library, you can swipe up and type alt text in the “Add a Caption” box. I’ve been doing that a lot lately. It also makes searching much easier.

Max Cerrina@alephnaught2tog.bsky.social

Are you tired of rewriting alt text for images you post a lot? On Macs*, you can do "Get Info" from Finder and add your base alt text as a comment, saved with the file. If it's in Photos, look at the info again and add it as a caption.

I legit believe that this human-brain/network-scale mismatch is the problem at the root of the organic (rather than professional, propaganda-shaped) derangement of our online spaces, and therefore of our offline ones. We just cannot handle knowing what people think in their brains to this degree.

Waitress where we went for dinner says her standing offer is that if anyone can run out on their check without her running faster and catching them, she’ll pay for their meal. “But no one’s tried me so far,” she says. (pause) “Gonna be the best day of my life.”

This week’s newsletter is a little bit about baseball and god and then more about living the dream and also about a couple of movies I’ve controversially enjoyed!!!

I upgraded from macOS 25 to 27 (yes, skipped Tahoe). Two things I had to tweak: 1. It was connected to WiFi and Ethernet but wouldn’t see the internet. I tried dis/reconnecting from the WiFi using the menubar widget and it didn’t help, but doing the same from the System Settings window worked. Huh.

2. Universal Control stopped working with my other Mac that’s running 26 (work machine, mandatory). I went back into System Settings > Displays and toggled Advanced… > "Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad" off and then on again, on both Macs. Immediately restored.

Anyone have rollator advice/brands/etc? Finally looking into them (I have such complex feelings about this) and there’s so many. #disability (please boost)

Nick and @andrewmreichart.bsky.social got me into Matt Howarth’s comics in college. I wrote to Matt a couple of times, once for a Post Bros. reader letter and another to order some older comics from him. He was friendly and kind and threw in something extra. Weird Luck is very much in Matt’s spirit.

RIP indie comics legend Matt Howarth (1954–2026), an inspiration since my mid-teens and by far the most formative influence on the writing of the Weird Luck webcomic. #comics #indiecomics #matthowarth #comicart #bugtown #heroes #inspiration #comicsky #fantasy #scifi #creators

A third of my comics collection is Matt Howarth. I collected Post Bros., Savage Henry, and Keif Llama, plus specials like WRAB. My reader letter included thanks for the “Love That ‘Bob’” comic that Matt wrote for The Stark Fist of Removal, and he reprinted it as the extra story in Post Bros. #11.
