ECMWF’s 9 km data is now free and open. The move will give more people access to accurate and localised forecasts. The resolution can make the difference, for example, between predicting rain in a large area and knowing which valley it will land in. Read more ➡️ www.ecmwf.int/en/about/med...

"acting on their own" is pure marketing slop and active disinformation that directly stops the people causing the problems from suffering consequences for causing them

👏 Amnesty Germany‘s statement on the Nobel Peace Prize. They say that it’s the right signal at the right time and they call on governments, including the German one, to enforce international law even when it’s politically inconvenient.

What a bad day for Germany! “…first member of the AfD — a party classified by domestic intelligence in Saxony-Anhalt as a ‘confirmed right-wing extremist’ organization — to become speaker in a state parliament in Germany.” Parliament speaker, not state premier, but it’s a bad and worrying step.

dw.comFar-right AfD candidate elected state parliamentary speakerTobias Rausch, the far-right Alternative for Germany's (AFD's) nomination for speaker in Saxony-Anhalt's state parliament, has been elected with the help of the populist BSW party.

Today is Germany‘s national holiday, the day when East and West Germany reunited in 1990. It’s not something that matters much here. The reunification yes, but not the national holiday thing.

What started as an experiment is now the world's largest SAR constellation. Since 2018, @esa.int has worked with ICEYE to bring its radar data to users, from disaster response to maritime monitoring, through Third Party Missions and Copernicus Contributing Missions. 🔗 earth.esa.int/eogateway/su...

During my trip to Spain, I was deeply moved to visit ESA's Cebreros ground station and personally thank the emergency responders, public authorities and local communities who worked tirelessly to protect lives, livelihoods and communities during this summer's wildfires that stretched across Spain.

Preliminary Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania election results: the chancellor’s party CDU (Christian Democratic Union) now below 5%, which means they will not have a seat in the state parliament anymore.

Chancellor is reacting with a lot of bla bla. Very sure this will not help. Only good way out I could think of is, he resigns and a new CDU chancellor is elected in parliament, someone with a bit of empathy and a less arrogant stance.

This year produced the hottest summer in the history of modern France. Some of that record is down to the specific weather patterns that occurred this year, but global warming deserves a large share of the credit for generally making French summers hotter over time.

What’s the difference between the ozone hole and climate change? Not much, I would say. In both cases, experts identified a problem, found a solution, and the international community agreed to act. #WorldOzoneDay

Then, for the ozone hole, the CFC ban was adopted, and, a few decades from now, the ozone hole will hopefully be gone. So, it’s possible! For climate change, we do have the Paris agreement, we are all set! We “just” need to overcome the last obstacles, i.e., mainly the desperate fossil fuel lobby.

📝 New article on Our World in Data: Is organic farming better for the environment than conventional farming? One of the most common questions we’re asked about food systems is whether organic farming is better for the environment than conventional methods.

Whatever they feared, this is so much better 😄. Watch this video, festival crowd singing Alphaville‘s ‘Forever Young’ after the band’s appearance at the German ‘Glücksgefühle’ festival had been canceled out of fear they might speak up against nazis (!). Not the only one, and more expected today.

My new favorite pastime is checking websites for AI generated images. Just kidding but I love the new EU rules, so informative. I hope people will take them seriously and comply with them. AI generated images need to be marked in a professional context, but not in a private context.
