I fear we’re watching multiple generations to give up any kind of ambition to improve at whatever craft can be automated mediocrely by LLMs. Repeatedly pulling the prompt lever will never end in excellence. ESPECIALLY if the boosters are right, “prompting” is not a long-term valuable skill. 1/2

Doubling Down on Python in The Age of AI I've been missing from The Python Coding Stack for a few weeks – but I'm back now. Like many, I've been thinking a lot about programming and Python in the age of AI. Here are my thoughts at present www.thepythoncodingstack.com/p/doubling-d...

Today’s news about OpenAI’s acquisition of Astral can be worrying, or even feel like we may be losing something we’ve come to rely on and trust. #python

I’ve found myself feeling unmoored by the current crop of FOSS contributions. I genuinely don’t know how to proceed.

I've started to play with lazy imports thanks to my WASI build script being in CPython's repo, and so I wrote a post about how to adapt your code for running subcommands with argparse to play nicely with lazy imports. snarky.ca/subcommands-...

got hit by a wave of slop prs last week so i guess it’s time to buckle down and spend my morning… writing an ai policy this looks-legitimate-but-trash slop reminds me of corporate phishing tests

Is Trump straks onze treinconducteur?

John Lennon would have been 85 today. Imagine all that could have been if his life wasn't cut so tragically short. Here’s a short piano tribute. Imagine is an uncomplicated song but as close to perfection as humanly possible (in my opinion). #music #musicians #JohnLennon

We're so relieved to see Germany reaffirm its opposition to the dangerous Chat Control proposal--the one that would mandate mass scanning of communications. Germany's long been a solid champion of privacy, and the news that it was considering backing mass surveillance was alarming. 1/

God I love the modernist design of this stuff so mouth. I don’t know if I could have it in my house but I could stare it for hours. So so thoughtful

It’s good we have data protection laws in Europe. I am old enough to remember Americans were claiming that these laws would ‘hold us back’.

Will's post also shows a great use case for Python's structural pattern matching. If the user can specify padding in many different formats, using `match` can validate the format during runtime and easily homogenise the structure. What do you think of this alternative? (Python 3.10+ only)

The Microsoft layoffs should remind us that companies don't choose their actions based on what's best for open source communities. The best they can do is try to align open source work with their business strategy. And business strategies shift all the time.

#Microsoft fired the team working on #Python interpreter/compiler optimization. They will pay millions in bonuses to execs who are already millionaires, but they won't commit a fair share to support the Free/OpenSource projects that enable their profits. Priorities.

Today, we’re announcing the preview release of ty, an extremely fast type checker and language server for Python, written in Rust. In early testing, it's 10x, 50x, even 100x faster than existing type checkers. (We've seen >600x speed-ups over Mypy in some real-world projects.)

I'm in it and I'm already worried about what I got factually wrong due to parent exhaustion. 😅

I'm the morning keynote on Thursday!

With composition, the object does what you want it to do, with inheritance, you must do what the base class wants you to do.
