My take aways from the Wizards-Bulls game a few nights ago: - the Wizards are finally fun to watch again... - except for Trae. - It's obvious the younger guys don't like playing with Trae really. And the ball moves better without him for the most part. - Coulibaly is looking really good.

His description of reviewers submitting proposals/submitted papers to LLMs for summaries, thus feeding the work into the company's training data, thus making the original work vulnerable to theft is going to be bad for research & underscores the stupidity of companies using AI tools they don't own.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

“This recent dump of papers on Tuesday destroyed the careers of early-career mathematicians. We've had whole research programs wiped out on Tuesday by their dump … they have all the mathematicians research programs in their training data” - Tristan Buckmaster on OpenAI solving unsolved math problems

And people are surely underestimating how common this practice is. When people describe what they find a defensible use of AI by students and in their research, it's truly shocking to me. But worse, those people are going to be quietly exposing all of their peers to potential theft of their work.

PSA: you should absolutely brush yourself up on the actual substance of the case against Elizabeth Holmes. She actively threatened and sought to silence whistleblowers. She tried to get Rupert Murdoch to kill stories by journalists at his outlets on her behalf.

The documentary is good and interesting and also the idea that she didn't understand Abbott and Costello or that "can" versus "is capable of" leaves some shadow of doubt about her culpability is entertaining nonsense, not meaningfully plausible.

Seeing a lot of long pieces being written by people who do not remember the details of the Theranos saga after seeing the new documentary and, boy, you really should sit on those takes until you freshen up your memory.

It's mostly a senior citizen scam, from what I understand.

Do they even understand how much they’re pissing people off by doing this. Whatever research that convinces them that spamming everyone is all upside is bullshit. It is like they’d rather have all my contact info to sell to other campaigns forever than receive my donation. It sucks.

Posting this after the season we just had is a hate crime.

Really cool study on a highly relevant policy topic in education right now.

Twenty states now require teacher candidates to pass a certification exam in the Science of Reading. Do these exams screen on who will be better at teaching reading, or just shrink the teacher pipeline? My job market paper answers this with data from Texas a 🧵 edworkingpapers.com/ai26-1615

I’ve been redesigning some interactive features for the accompanying website for the “Inequality of Recession” working paper series. After making this visualization, the data shows that generally speaking, the last couple years looks like a mild downturn in the labor market. #EconSky

I will think about this as I do my fairly burdensome complete financial disclosures in the coming weeks required of all state employees at a certain level.

My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...

It's no longer front page news, but the same tactics from the Trump administration are continuing, now to elite public universities.

The Trump administration's settlement with UNC-Chapel Hill requires the university to hire additional staff, raising concerns about administrative spending compelled by the federal government. www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...

First of all, that was nonsense. Second of all, "the evidence shows, at least in my opinion..." is two phrases fighting each other for meaning in the same sentence.

I have to imagine data centers are very heistable with a crew. In the middle of nowhere, minimal staffing, just a big warehouse.

There better be a heist movie where instead of shoveling cash into a duffel bag, the protagonists are pulling GPUs out of a server rack

holy shit -- turns out Jack Smith went to a Hawkeyes game in Maryland but Schmitt's team is so reckless they concocted a conspiracy theory that Smith was actually in Atlanta seeing a Hawks game and colluding with Fani Willis. Klobuchar points out to Schmitt, "you have your teams wrong."

As a Florida alum of the Tebow era it pains me deeply to agree. But that's really just because I maintain a deep suspicion of prosperity gospel evangelicals writ large. Always feels like a ticking clock before they use the moral authority of faith to exploit desperate Christians for self-enrichment.

I would love to see a cumulative assessment of the security costs for figures in the Trump administration, and where that money is coming from. Some of this has dribbled out. For example, Russ Vought took $5 million from CFPB and $13.5 million from USAID. bsky.app/profile/donm...

I agree with all of this and would only add that, in my experience, the people who discount university life in preference for industry job training are people who entered college without meaningful exposure to jobs and went straight into an office job from college.

Josh Chafetz@joshchafetz.bsky.social

There's a lot to say about this, and other folks are saying most of it. I just want to focus on one thing: the claim about the relationship between universities and "the real world."

Having worked a lot of very crappy jobs up to and through my undergraduate degree, the intellectual and creative freedom of university life was more real and authentic than any aspect of the things you do in jobs you need to survive to cope with the inherent imbalance of power that entails.

Perfectly timed response to WB merger likely going through, lol. Anyway, get your libraries to sign up for Kanopy. And set up Plex servers. And get a DVD player and rent DVDs from the library. Just a reminder of the alternatives to streaming.
