It was very kind of Paul Wells to give me some space on his Substack to air a few of my frustrations with the coverage (including his!) of Pierre Poilievre's argument about LNG and federal policy. #cdnpoliopen.substack.com/pub/paulwell...
After US forces attacked Venezuela and took Maduro, Trump made it clear he is willing to do the same to other countries in American orbit that don’t fall in line.
How worried should Canada be? Dr. Janice Stein joins.

A wintery week on the road — passing the federal budget, strengthening public health care, hearing from British pensioners fighting for fairness, meeting students on the Hill, and receiving a meaningful honour from my alma mater.
Here’s your Weekly Wrap. youtu.be/xcT7qu9Ipdw?...
Luxembourg is officially in Canada! Pleased to join Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg @xavierbettel.bsky.social, Ambassador Jean Claude Kugener and Minister Anita Anand to celebrate the opening of the Embassy of Luxembourg in Ottawa. This next step builds on our strong relationship.
2) Growth measures (cont'd)
on corp taxes:
- reaffirmed accelerated depreciation renewal from December's FES. I'm glad then-Minister Freeland pushed for this in FES. Glad Mr. Carney continuing it.
In my view this is biggest tax 'bang for buck' tax measure on the table, and I'm glad to see it.
Anyone remember how the Americans labelled the French as cheese eating surrenderers when they refused to vote for the Iraq invasion in the UN Security Council? How glad are Canadians that we declined to participate thanks to Jean Chretien’s Liberal government
Spent a great Sunday in Manotick with over 100 volunteers knocking doors! Canadians are coming together to prevent American style politics from coming into our country. Here in Manotick, we’re doing our part and taking on Pierre Poilievre.

Incredibly, in his abrupt reversal on trade policy, Trump seemingly just *increased* tariffs on Mexico and Canada to 10%.
Until today, the U.S. has only had 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, and autos, plus 10% on energy and potash. (With the caveat that it's 0% for USMCA-compliant trade.)
NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID.
This is what actual campus censorship looks like.
It was great connecting with Fraserview Meats to show our support for #Canadian products & businesses.

Happy 1,604th birthday, Venice!
It took me several months in orbit to get this picture, waiting for the right lighting & no cloud. Bellissima #Venezia!
🇨🇦 Because apparently it's not common knowledge:
You don't need a voter card, or be registered in advance to vote in a federal election. Find out where your poll is at elections.ca , come with some ID (there's options), and you can vote. It's really that easy.
What I noticed watching Poilievre today. He smiled a lot more, when he usually smirks. So a more positive stance He repeated his favourite phrases. He failed utterly when asked why he hasn’t got a security clearance. The latter matters to me a lot
Mosquito Monument (Komarno):
Unveiled in October 1986, the statue honours the early settlers who battled swarms of mosquitos to settle in the area. The community's name also refers to mosquitos in Ukrainian. OFF! also filmed an ad at the monument.
Americans think they have a god given right to all the benefits of a progressive and fair tax system without paying fair and progressive taxes. Surprise!
I hope Americans understand, Canadians won’t just go without sipping your bourbon, peeling your oranges, or visiting your sunny climes. We will scrape the lichen off the fucking rocks.
Trudeau: "I want to speak first directly to the American people. We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally. We don't want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to rise dramatically."
Well, I guess the review or renegotiation of CUSMA planned for next year is off. How do you negotiate with a country whose president lies and breaks his agreements and threatens his neighbours? To US friends: try to save your country
Here is Tim Snyder’s more complete point. I hope to discuss this in depth with @djrothkopf.bsky.social and @jonatomic.bsky.social on a special episode of Deep State Radio this Monday.
I'm sharing an image a day to celebrate the vibrant and unique culture and history of Canada.
Today, it is the World's Largest Pysanka in Vegreville, flanked by RCMP Officers.

Our incomparable Ken Dryden in @TheAtlantic.com today.
Who doesn’t carry that image of him standing talk in the crease, leaning casually on his upright goalie stick?
