My ultra hot take: Adults should not play basketball. This is how you break your ankle.

Chris Sommerfeldt@c-sommerfeldt.bsky.social

New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

Me watching a tv show with my wife and the scene is adult men playing a pickup game: Oh no, someone is going to break an ankle Next scene: graphic ankle breaking

Maybe it’s a good thing that we’re racing to the point where anything left will be theoretical? Idk

Aligns with my deep anti-support for local business. Those are the assholes who want more police and to ban books at your library.

love it when anarchists say this because most "local community" councils irl in places like new england or small rural towns are typically deeply *right wing* and hate immigrants and queer people despite representing a "broad swathe" of the entire population. leftism is supposed to be COSMOPOLITAN.

This is exactly what ICE said: "Parra-Hernandez ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck." Now watch the video. They're no other word for it: They're lying.

Eric Umansky@ericumansky.bsky.social

Watch an ICE agent run down and then run over a man. The man was was then writhing on the ground, saying "You broke my leg! You broke my leg!" Agents didn't help him. And btw, the man wasn't the target of their operation.

I didn’t finish reading Stephenson’s “Fall; or, Dodge in Hell” because the virtual world building was too much for my brain with a newborn, but the personal ai filters to filter out the onslaught of others’ ai seems prescient

John Herrman@jwherrman.bsky.social

Even more than usual, tech companies are treating the internet/economy like a sandbox, a benchmark to be saturated. Sometimes an agent shows up and solves everyone's problem. Sometimes it makes a new one, or just makes it someone else's. (Of AI "bottlenecks," I think this one is underrated.)

I thought perhaps the Russian bot / data center claims were overblown. In the last three days the Waltham Channel on Facebook has zero right wing comments on their posts. WALTHAM.

Would it be so hard for Bluesky to remember the last thing I read and just position me there when I open it up the next time?

Hard to think of a more likable monster movie cast than the one in Tremors. It's my ideal horror-comedy hybrid, one where the jokes come from how fun the characters are rather than subverting any of the tension.

I assume this gets filed under “one more reason not to pay taxes” under the GOP voter zeitgeist

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

If it were possible with policy, forcing stores to implement a single queue for multiple registers would accomplish the same thing. No one likes being their own checker, they use the self checkout because it’s faster and it’s faster because of the single queue.

Aaron Ross Powell@aaronrosspowell.com

Grocery profit margins are razor thin. This policy will lead to an increase in grocery prices. Maybe people are okay with that to keep a particular kind of job around, but we should be clear that this is asking customers to pay more for their family's food to subsidize one small labor sector.

HypoCon Theory

John Fugelsang@johnfugelsang.bsky.social

"House Republicans will continue to hold Hunter Biden’s feet to the fire until we have his testimony...no one – not even the president’s son – is above the law.” - Tom Emmer, 1.17.24 "Don Jr is a private citizen and businessman so this unwarranted attack will go nowhere," Tom Emmer, 9.23.26

Maybe she’s just trying to speed run the retirement of the old guard Democratic Party to usher in a young era.

Meredith Shiner@meredithshiner.com

I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.

We’re calling it the Death Ballroom

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Exclusive: In the weeks leading up to his resignation last year, the first architect on the White House ballroom clashed with President Trump over design features that the architect believed violated building safety codes. “I am the code,” Trump said.

I want to believe. It’s a very juicy thread.

I’ve seen this thread about twenty times in the last two hours and nobody seems to have noticed that it’s from a complete rando and cites no sources?

A couple went on a Fox News podcast and claimed the state of #Massachusetts took away their teen because they won't help the teen transition. But it's actually because the father was charged with beating and threatening to kill the teen and the mother was charged with witness intimidation.

My cognitive dissonance is that I actually believe gas should be this expensive.

HELL Kennedy@helenkennedy.com

I try not to repost dumb memes but I went to look at the reaction on Truth Social to Trump's post saying gas prices were higher under Biden and someone posted this and I was amused.

HypoCon theory rivaled only by PedoCon theory

Mrs. Betty Bowers@mrsbettybowers.bsky.social

So notoriously anti-LGBTQ Lauren Boebert had a sexual relationship with a woman on her staff and then paid her hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep quiet? Republican hypocrisy is so shameless.

My mortgage is locked in at a 3% rate and my cars are paid off. Those big expenses are well managed. But childcare is $40k a year, cheap shit is no longer cheap, and I haven’t seen a meaningful raise in four years. The future doesn’t feel bright.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Okay, I made a chart, it's every month since 1977. The blue line is how many people are citing high prices as a reason for worse finances in the U Mich consumer survey. The orange line is the annualized change in CPI. Do you see how the very close correlation MASSIVELY BREAKS DOWN in 2022?

One side of this war has an elected legislature but it doesn't really have any power compared to the supreme leader and the council of guardian jurists, and the other is Iran.

I’m just a simple country man, but isn’t the whole point of fuel to explode into fire?

Humanoid History@humanoidhistory.bsky.social

The legendary Crash in the Desert, 1984: NASA and the FAA slammed a remotely-controlled Boeing 720 into the Mojave to test a fire-preventing fuel additive. The plane touched down askew, a runway post tore into the fuselage, and spilled fuel caught fire anyway.

I am at my most pedantic when I point out that the term is Situation Awareness. Still, calling it Situational Awareness is a red flag that someone doesn’t really know what they’re talking about.
