We need to implement some sort of annual test for these people. We’ll call it an IQ test so they’re excited to take it but it’s a mix of trivia, current events, and ethics. If they fail, they are fined half of their wealth.

Nostradamus mentioned, so I feel compelled to bring up the fact that James Randi wrote the Mask of Nostradamus, a biography of the man. Exhaustively researched and interesting as hell. Dude was pretty clever in how he made his living.

“There are perhaps a few hundred people, most of them in San Francisco and the AI labs, that have situational awareness,” he wrote in his viral essay. “Through whatever peculiar forces of fate, I have found myself amongst them.” The amount of farts that this dude was huffing is measured in pounds

They sold their public stock portfolio but retain their private market holdings. "SA's portfolio lost 67% of its value in July, according to an investor letter Leopold Aschenbrenner sent late Thursday, though the fund remains up about 80% for 2026" www.implicator.ai/situational-...

yeah like I said, anything with a price on it. because he failed to hedge his AI bet so badly that even when the book was up by like 400 percent some minor turbulence wiped him out

I don't even need to click to know it was another wallet inspector. Rich people are stupid as hell and consistently fall for every Bernie Madoff scheme they can find.

Tech takes a lot of L's from our supposed leaders (who are really just finance guys) but this one is genuinely a finance guy.

"After years of success that inspired one podcaster to nickname Aschenbrenner the 'Nostradamus of AI.'" "One podcaster." We now live in a world where for the price of a microphone and (optionally) a camera you can be an expert and people will believe you.

depends on whether you mean "investor" like someone who puts money into an endeavour in good faith so that it will grow and profit or the modern sense of an overpriced conman who buys out companies, ortolans them up into dying overinflated blobfishes, and sells promises of how big they'll get later

There has been pushback against the anti-ai sentiment here on Bluesky. And sure, fine: ai should be judged on its merits weighed against its costs. But ai proponents often deserve pitiless derision. They're as bad as Musk. Don't like being thought a walking self-parody? Then don't act like one.

there was a scam decades ago where a company would sell people the deeds to distant stars...

Depends on the universe, but certainly any FTL travel capable of crossing to other galaxies in a reasonable amount of time entails being able to get anywhere *within* a galaxy near-instantaneously. That's actually one of my bigger problems with Star Wars - it takes like a week to cross the galaxy.

The key is to take out leveraged positions after you get the first few hundred millions, rake in the dough, brag about your performance, and keep doing it until the market turns. Yeah your investors will take a beating, but 20% is 20% while it's good.

Good news! I have located a Big Beautiful Galaxy (that is definitely not a shithole galaxy). I can rename it Galaxy of America (as indicated, or even Most American Galaxy America if you wish. Contact me for pricing.

"To think of these stars that you see overhead at night, these vast worlds which we can never reach. I would annex the planets if I could; I often think of that. It makes me sad to see them so clear and yet so far." - Cecil Rhodes Same ambition, extra delusion

So either a) he invents warp drive (unlikely tbh) or b) "galaxy ownership" is more of an NFT thing, and right-click-save-as works great on pictures of galaxies

Unless it's by space time warping but that requires amounts of energy that likely needs antimatter in large amounts and it would need to create enough energy that it might have the kind of mass that it could create a blackhole if too concentrated.

Technically the closest one is just a mere 2 million light years away. And at the fastest "safest" speed we can travel (0.2c), it will take a mere 10 million years to get there. But I already bought that galaxy, so you can't go there without my permission.

This is ridiculous. He couldn't possibly buy galaxies. At least, not without my permission. I hold title on them all. He has never contacted me to make an offer. I don't think he's even checked my price list. Some of them are remarkably affordable, if you pay in cash.

Bitch can't even own a star in stellaris if you can't resupply the regiment there

One of the greatest mistakes of the past century and a half was to convince people that if they’re good at maths, they’re intelligent. It’d be funny to watch US folks think they’re smart just because they know how to use a tool above average, if it wasn’t destroying our planet. Rich kids are called

smart and they think it can be extrapolated to the rest of the world. Even their factual, basic level physics, chemistry and astronomy is laughable. But still they think they’re smart. This is white men confidence flavour with money sprinkled on top

“Buy a galaxy” is the kinda shit a brain generates when you do DMT after never having once been intellectually curious or paid attention in science class, so the drugs have no grounded information to work with. Just the illusion of epiphany built on infinitely nested failures in comprehension.

in the sense, i guess, that "in a better world donald trump would *also* have ~~hanged himself~~ ~~[how deep do we go in this rabbithole here for the purpose of this reply]~~ died in prison by now"

We have too many tech bros like this in San Francisco. I wish this AI would crash already so they all go back to whatever suburb they came here from.

I guarantee that there's a huge overlap between the investors who thought this nutcase was a "visionary" and the investors who thought Sam Bankman-Fried's predilection for dressing like a schlub and playing video games during important business calls were indications of his unfathomable genius.

Example number 37473625538859 that beint good at computer does not in any way mean you are smart at anything else
