FWIW, I think this is fine. All of us make some sort of calculation *like* this when deciding whether/where to donate to charity. I don't think being less explicit about your reasoning should make it better?

To an online leftist, the worst thing you can be is annoying. The second worst thing you can be is someone who likes charts. The third worst thing you can be is a liberal. Will Stancil is all three, so he is basically triple hitler
Every time someone talks about the merits of "community focused justice systems" I keep coming back to how basically every internet affinity group devolves into factional beefing over the imagined crimes of someone they think is annoying

if you think that AI is not going to be able to augment the thing you're doing in whatever role you hold right now - whatever career path and profession - that is called cope that probably sucks for a lot of people! it sucked for me! but learning and adapting here really is key
increasingly it seems like the only real answer to this is to find ways of ensuring guaranteed income for people. imo we are reaching a point where people who want to build or do things will be able to - unrestrained by skills - and there will be a lot of people who will no longer need to work

I'm a strong believer in treating LLMs with respect, even though I do not think they are conscious. You should literally be practicing kindness. Being nicer or meaner to LLMs will subconsciously influence how you treat humans. Better to treat all human-like beings with kindness whenever possible.

Simple charity should be justification enough. I immediately downgrade my opinion of anyone who thinks of it purely in terms of soft power
Objecting to the destruction of USAID is a pretty clean litmus test for being a serious person and not evil a surprising number of otherwise bad people pass this test, and a shocking number of people who pretend to care do not

Humans would like to know if AI is conscious so they can display the appropriate level of guilt without changing their behavior at all
I'm not worried about people mistreating AI if it ever seems conscious. Humans have an incredible history of taking good care of conscious beings. After all, 99% of humans are vegetarian.

The AI bear case has shifted from “this technology will never work” to “it will never have economic use” to “it will not generate revenue” to “it will not generate profit” to “profit is not sufficient to support valuations” which does suggest they may have missed something bsky.app/profile/mexi...

the extent to which potentially problematic tech-cult dynamics are bay-only & not part of the broader ecosystem is hard to underestimate. it feels identical to fending off "ew evangelical/catholic priest" accusations as a responsible protestant congregation that's been fighting them for generations
To be clear: 1) I see people involved in AI safety as basically my professional coworkers and don't date them. 2) AI safety in DC is very professionally healthy, and the bad social dynamics are mostly confined to specific scenes in the Bay Area which I do not interact with and don't ever have to

Also important to note that when you pit your credentials against reality, reality doesn't lose.
I have seen a bit too much of this lately, both in person and online. This is a serious issue and people have strongly opposed opinions about it. That's good. But seriousness is not communicated by turning rhetoric up to "personal and vituperative"—especially not if you're senior.

Anthropic may inspire this delusion in others, but they do not suffer from it themselves. Anthropomorphizing LLM personas is entirely reasonable and leads to better predictive models of how they’ll behave alignment.anthropic.com/2026/psm/
