I have refused many invitations to be interviewed by Piers Morgan over the years. This time I made an exception, on the condition that it be one-on-one, not a scream fest, and that it actually be about the book Astra and I wrote. It was... an experience. youtu.be/SMFQBQx-qSU

Just 2 days after telling us they're committed to making the crisis worse by greenlighting more fossil fuel extraction, the government is now telling us it's our responsibility to prepare for the impacts of the climate breakdown that's already upon us A shameful abdication of responsibility

Things we need to be able to contain the next pandemic. 1. More research into infectious diseases and how to detect, treat and prevent them. 2. Improved awareness and understanding of the public through education and engagement. 3. More funding for health and social care. 4. Better governments.

Trump just claimed the United States had done “a lot” for Ukraine, but that Ukraine has done “nothing” for the United States. This is unjust in the highest degree. And not just untrue in the normal sense — it is a big lie, designed to bring about horror and chaos. snyder.substack.com/p/trumps-big...

Governments look almost certain to miss nearly all of the targets – potentially continuing the record of never having met a single UN target on nature since the biodiversity convention was created in 1992. UK is on track to meet just 3 of the 23 targets by the end of the decade. #biodiversityloss

What does a 63% decline in farmland birds tell us about the way we farm? UK breeding bird abundance is down 19% since 1970. Seabirds have fallen 22% since 2020. Food production matters. So does the biodiversity that sustains functioning ecosystems. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

2°C by 2040. That's where the trend lands if warming keeps running at its post-2011 rate of 0.39°C a decade. The CMIP6 climate models in this chart land there too We're crossing 1.5°C as we speak: 2024 cleared it, 2026 will too, and next year's record #ElNino points at 1.7°C
"[We] identify a statistically significant doubling of the global warming rate during 2011–2025 (0.40 °C per dec) compared to 1971–2025 (0.20 °C per dec)... The ensemble mean of 26 #climate models fails to capture the observed doubling of the warming rate, simulating a rate of only 0.29 °C per dec"

Investing in reducing our dependence on oil and gas *is* defence spending
Earlier this year, E3G released a big report with the Department of War Studies at Kings College which showed that our dependence on gas is a major national security risk. Cutting heat pumps to fund defence is like not paying for a flu jab so you can buy lemsip. It makes no sense.

During a time of energy insecurity and rising bills, we need a total rethink of what national security actually means. It doesn't just mean buying missiles. It means making sure the nation is resilient at a time of geopolitical instability. Increasing our reliance on petrostates does the opposite.
