if you can't find a way to make works that are artistically compelling, challenging, and advance the form in some way feel meaningful - then that's your failure, and the larger market's failure. but it's not the failure of people making the games. i wish more people understood that.

Sakurai explains his opinion on originality and AI in a new interview: TLDR familiarity sells, but “___likes”, games with simple mechanics, etc are at most risk of being imitated by AI because their mechanics already exist originality, however, comes from creating something no one knows exists yet

American indie devs: Aw geez... I hope I have the game design of this perfectly balanced out. Maybe I should do more bug testing? Oh I hope I don't give off the wrong messages in my game. European indie devs:

prompts and hints: sometimes it’s like modern indie games are afraid of being misunderstood. like they over-explain themselves a lot. it would be nice if they also allowed the player to figure things out. if you need to explain it this much maybe the design is too esoteric…

Feels like this musicfication of games has already happened thanks to free engines, copious tutorials and online resources. LLMs underline and feed it sure. If "bridge" becomes trivial naturally more scrutiny is placed on "opera".

Ok im gonna say something here that is going to draw a lot of different feelings from everyone, and I want to be clear i'm not "in support of this" or "against it". i'm just saying it as an observation that seems true to me: I think with the latest frontier LLMs, the “music” era of games is upon us

And looking at contemporary indie games this doesn't mean better artistic quality but better target audience optimisation or whatever you would call recognising a trend and cashing in on that while you can.

Always such a happy surprise when a game like this pops up from somewhere ✨

Top 5 Simpsons lines - Oww my ass! - Eat ass bald ass bald eaters! - That's the guy! That's the guy from my dream! - Thanks for bringing me my model of the digestive system. - (Say the line Bart!) My work exists at the intersection of art and technology.

The 5 Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most off the top of my head -I'm learnding! -See this is why I don't talk much. -Please don't tell people how I live. -I used to be with it, but then they changed what IT was! -...as was the style at the time.

You COULD adopt a POV that all this happened because the secret of video games leaked. And you might blame "games for change, improve broken reality!!" rhetoric for that... but no. It was the intl. spread of mobile games followed by money idiots mistaking bigger studio = even bigger $ than mobilie

”Try to take out all the ’gameplay’ to just have it somehow be pure art, and you've just dug down to whatever your default assumptions of gameplay are. […] These gameplay models provide the structure for the art to happen in.” Yes!! I think gameplay is out of which the art comes out.

Reading this memo, all i can think of is them doing search-and-replace Xbox -> XBOX now that it’s the branding..

Emuurom is also very Finnish, in the vein of Noita, Void Stranger, Baba Is You, etc. Whatever they're putting in the water over there is giving indie devs All Of The Ideas.

I'm looking for new subjects for PC Gamer's Weird Weekend column. Are you making a PC game that's odd as heck? Are you part of an unusual gaming community? Does your work intersect with games in a curious way? Is there a gaming-related mystery you'd like explored? Get in touch at rick@ricklane.co.uk

Thanks to @tatsoni.bsky.social's assistance, I'm brewing Sima for Vappu! Pretty straightforward, basically lemon, loads of sugar, and some yeast. Alcohol is supposed to be negligible, but I don't know man, the stuff is bubbling pretty fast 😅

I wish big game companies would hire indies to make small & cheap games based on their big IPs. Local example comes to mind: horror coop set in the Oldest House from Remedy's Control. Wow that would own...

Inspired by this post i read the book in one sitting. So captivating was the description of this bygone era. Props to Jordan Mechner for not editing his past self even when at times he comes across v annoying lol, i couldn’t do that.

finished reading this. it was good! What a different world/industry/everything we have now, in ways that ought to mostly be good if only things weren't constantly being interfered with by incompetent capitalists etc

trying to put into words of my increasing kind of alienation from the gradually coalescing Weird Game Aesthetic from Critical Reflex published-games and the Haunted PS1 ilk is it's really increasingly hard to tell if something is actually good or worthwhile or not based on vibes alone.
