My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

(with apologies to Yes) Five down, one to go Another town and one more show State championships in two weeks. I can't tell the squad this, but they haven't peaked yet. I can see that. Now we just need two weeks without too much teenage drama...

'You can't buy happiness' I beg to differ. Three boxes of full-size candy bars and a box of full-size Skittles made my marchers very happy, thank you. Made me even more happy to hand out. This is the 8th year, and I treasure this tradition

In marching band, we talk in beats, meaures, sets, and chunks. Beats and measures are driven by the music, sets and chunks by the drill and choreography. Our trouble spots tend to be what my brain fixes on musically and what replays in my brain at 2am

Our current one is in the middle of chunk 2 of our 3rd song. To be perfectly fair, it's the last thing I taught the guard because the drill is crazy at that point and was in flux until last week. Unfortunately for me, it's also the exact phrase being used in a commercial for a major store ( 🎯 ) now

So when I've got the football game on and have just gotten the music out of my head... Sigh Back to sorting out how to thread through the sousas again...

Me: (quiet quits a digital newspaper subscription by keeping it on an expired card) Newspaper - tries renewing. Tries renewing with combinations of new expiration dates. Sends 4 emails PER DAY. Calls from 8 different numbers up to six times EACH per day Me: blocks each and every one

I did pick up one call before blocking and specifically asked when the time I had already paid for ended, and that date was two weeks out, so it's not collections. I said to not bother me anymore, but still they try. If only they put half as much effort into reporting instead of using slop...

1. It is not 1975 anymore. Different options are available 2. There generally is not a person staying at home all day who can prepare a multicourse themed meal with an immaculate house 3. Not everyone has a house! Hosting a dinner party in a small apartment is not ideal. 4. Multiple jobs/schedules

One of the most bizzare competitions I've ever done * surprise all-morning rain * a lost bus order * getting to site 90 mins late * a broken bass clarinet * clarinet knee injury * having to clean literal dog crap from the warm-up area * only 4 passes for staff/pit Somehow, still got first place

Or, and this is just a maybe Mr Rolling Stone Author, I exist outside of the demographic for the song. I have no Tik or Insta, no FB. I watch limited TV, and my radio habits are...eclectic. Also, the song ranking system is garbage and easily manipulated, meaning very little

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

Advice for my younger friends: if you want to encourage yourself to stay healthy and functional, to exercise and eat well... ...pick a couple of motherfuckers you really want to outlive.

Guard student: I had to pull my choreo because I was afraid of hitting several band members Band Director-hit them. They're in the wrong spot Guard coach (me)-yeah, it's only a swing flag, not a six Student-um, but it was like all the trumpets Brass Coach-DO IT! It might finally move them

Swing flag-3/4" dowel rod, about 42" long with most of the pole taken up with a silk flag 6-a six foot long 1 inch aluminium pole with a silk flag And no, the flag stick wasn't actually going to hit the trumpets--at worst, they'd get a face full of silk

Just encouraging all Mac users to contact Apple and tell them it's BS that Siri and Apple intelligence can no longer be fully disabled in the latest update (OS27). Reports vary by device, but between 10G and 30G of AI garbage models downloading. I just wiped and will be staying with 26 for a while 😡

Competition #1 in the books for this marching season, 3 caption trophies and a 1st in class to put up on the shelf tomorrow. Its amazing - every year my 3rd years and up get hungry for more w/a win and my second years just get cocky. Going to be a week w/this glut of sophomore low brass...

20 y/o me would be confused by current-day me. In general, mostly impressed but very confused by career path and the second job with marching band. Oh, and the whole thing of not living in the midwest

Things I was frightened of as a child: -Tornadoes (I had been through 2 before the age of 5, it was legit) -Wind in general -Bulls (think of the Looney Tunes bull chasing everything, and then put that bull in the pasture that abutted my backyard. He also took out our fence twice) -Yellowjackets

My 40 seconds happened 25 years ago today, as an atypical (young and relatively healthy) patient. I am getting ready to go teach a color guard routine today because I had a boss who recognized the signs and got me immediately to hospital (And 11 mos of intense PT)

Adding on to this-the toys that are part and parcel with this? They might not be safe for kids. Just because yours survived doesn't mean they are safe. Especially if they have been stored in an attic! Plastic does not do well with 100+ degree changes

Very detailed read. BTW - your 'local' grocery, if it is part of a chain? Yeah, they do centralized control/monitoring too. In addition to alleged better uptime, it keeps them from having to pay overnight staff to monitor in-store.

Neurodivergents during marching season--*3 months Bonus of you waking up from watching the UDB version in your dream (for non-marchers: UDB is Ultimate Drill Book, and it plays a MIDI version of the music while animation shows where to march)

We have reached the part of the marching season where I get woken up by segments of the music. On repeat. Over and over again. To make it worse this time, our ballad happens to be a song I skated to as a child, and had to play on piano as a teen. Hated it then, despise it now

The high school I coach at is on the smaller side (albeit 2.5-3x the size of the one I graduated from). I am constantly trying to tell my kids is that when they go on, being the best at their HS means nothing, since they're going to be with 100 other 'best at their HS' kids. Resilience is key.

During first-year orientation at UChicago I remember everyone saying "Oh my God it SO nice to be with SO MANY smart people" while having the "oh shit they're ALL as smart as me" look in their eyes (yes me too). We all got over it, but, yeah, recognizing you're no longer "the smart one" is a thing
