Alas, he's still above the law. Why do California bureaucrats have such a soft spot in their brain for Elon Musk?

e.w. niedermeyer@niedermeyer.online

OK, so it looks like California DMV is actually giving Tesla an out on this... if Tesla stops calling it "Full Self-Driving" this is... disappointing, but still a win www.cnbc.com/2025/12/16/c...

Can we call it Tesla Car Service (TCS) instead of a “Robotaxi Launch”? $tsla $tslaq

Tesla touted a Robotaxi service coming soon to San Francisco. But it told regulators it plans to offer a car service for "friends and family" that's more like a limo service than a Waymo competitor. www.cnbc.com/2025/07/25/t...

This is so on brand for Tesla. Not to mention it floods the news with shallow Robotaxi headline stories over more detailed and researched lawsuit stories. $tsla $tslaq

We interviewed an attorney repping Benavides (plaintiffs) in an Autopilot fatality case... He said companies shouldn't "shout the claims and whisper the disclaimers." This feels similar. To fans, investors they're gonna do autonomous transportation in SF. To regulators? Charter party carrier!

Good morning, we are once again on the record here in Oakland for day four of the the hearing to resolve the California DMV's complaint against Tesla for misleading marketing of its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability options. DMV is back cross-examining Tesla project manager Chris Griffith.

😂 $tsla $tslaq

e.w. niedermeyer@niedermeyer.online

DMV is done with questions for their witness. Tesla asks for time to prepare for the cross-examination, while moving to fully strike all of BWS's testimony. "He said things that are very negative, and arguably actionable." MOTION OVERRULED

e.w. niedermeyer@niedermeyer.online

"This is not a case of reasonable people can disagree," BWS says. Regulators object strenuously to terms like "self-driving" for anything other than real, actual, fully autonomous capability. This concern also isn't new, he notes, saying NHTSA clarified this heavily in 2013 guidance.

Replying to @niedermeyer.online

This is such a horrifying argument: just because people use a wide variety of blatantly contradictory terms to describe systems that they clearly do not understand with sufficient sophistication doesn't mean it's OK for Tesla to deepen this particular problem for profit (while endangering roads)!

Hey Austin, this is why we need you out in the streets documenting Tesla's dangerous and irresponsible self-driving experiment! If you see Teslas with manufacturers plates, take photo and video (or descriptions of behavior you see) and post them with the hashtag #fauxbotaxi. Public info is key!

Is it strange that Tesla and the City of Austin and haven’t made a single statement about Tesla’s Robotaxi service launching next week? Ribbon cutting ceremony? A Parade? Where, when? Safety measures? Permit approval? Is a service actually launching? $tsla $tslaq

Elon would have to have something pretty big (and not implicate himself) to think he wins against Trump. Trump has a couple dozen arrows in his quiver he could use. $tsla $tslaq #spaceX

Sounds like the Govt. needs SpaceX, not necessarily Elon. @ericlipton.nytimes.com

Eric Lipton NYT@ericlipton.nytimes.com

Trump can threaten SpaceX and Musk. But US government needs SpaceX almost more than SpaceX needs US government. DOD is addicted to SpaceX, as is NASA. Starlink is surging in profits anyway faster than SpaceX launch. Yes, Musk gets massive fed contracts. But DOD needs to get to space. So does NASA

As someone who watched a fleet of human-driven Teslas map out the WB lot for 2 WEEKS prior to the Robotaxi “unveiling” last year to avoid a fuckup on that small space, no way I’m getting in one of these.

A Chinese armada is heading to the US to take advantage of the limited time offer of only 30% tariffs.* *Note: Limited time offer, subject to change, up to 54% (or maybe 80%).

Teflon Bust@teflonbust.bsky.social

I am looking forward to copious screenshots of Chinese ships heading to US ports tho. #sarcasm

Never seen the market so happy about tax increases 😂 So much winning.

Excellent NYT graphic. In the space of about 3 months, tariffs on China: -- doubled; -- went up ≈ 2.5X from there; -- roughly doubled again; -- went up ≈ 40% from there; -- and now have dropped ≈ 80% from the peak -- but are still 3X what they were in February. www.nytimes.com/article/trum...

Why would any law enforcement choose an EV, let alone Tesla? “Tesla Model 3s purchased by his department cost almost $150,000 each one they were upfitted. Tesla doesn’t offer its vehicles ready for law enforcement, and there’s only one aftermarket company which will do the work….$$$ $tsla $tslaq

Good morning with good news: EV sales in Europe grew 22% in March 2025, compared to March 2024. Full Electric Vehicles (BEV) were up 24% in March, while Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) rose 19%. Plug-in vehicles were 26% of auto sales. And Tesla crashes! #energysky cleantechnica.com/2025/05/01/e...

🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read. He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

Hilarious if true. Tesla $tsla $tslaq

It looks like someone has hacked a crosswalk button in Palo Alto to deliver at least two different messages in the voice of Elon Musk. (They are not complimentary)

Funny that ever is talking about the tariff “exemptions”. While biz phone tariffs have essentially gone from <3% to 20% since Trump was inaugurated. It may be tough for them if consumers continue to pull back on spending, as they already struggle with growth. $aapl
