Man, one thing I hate about modern society is how many official ways we allow ourselves to say no to things, but then only a lot of bad things get "yes."

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

If you require a consensus from existing residents of a neighbourhood to build new housing for other people, you’re not going to build a lot of new housing for other people.

Want to build a bike lane? Well, here we have a community member who values the existing parking, so no. Want to drive a monster truck at 60mph in a residential street? That's personal freedom, and you can't say "no" to that (unless it affects parking).

I know it is not as simple as "this is no" and "this is yes" but boy does it feel like we give ourselves a lot of reasons as a society to say no to things except for the things that have the most externalities!

Man I've had to explain to too many people that I don't respect these requests because they charged me a cleaning fee. I'm glad AirBnB is changing this, because shit like "pull all sheets off the bed" is deranged.

Caroline Haskins@carolinehaskins.bsky.social

Airbnb is banning its hosts from making guests do things like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” The hosts....are not taking it well: www.wired.com/story/airbnb...

Dunking on Ben Franklin with a "deez nuts" in the afterlife, high-five-ing the next guy in line who has to answer

Philip Bump@pbump.com

Even if this were viable as a concept (that there's an afterlife; that it allows conversations with others; that enslavers are going the same place as you), who cares? Oh, are you mad at me, Ben Franklin? Tough shit.

If the next incoming dem president wants to appoint me as head of DOT, my first move will be to revoke the license for people who do this and give them a replacement bus pass for their city of choice.

💯. Drivers, you have not been deputized to use deadly force to enforce your personal interpretation of the vehicle code.

Sounds like we're having quite the bad week here on the Internet

I mean, this is only _one_ of the reasons Alan Wake 2 is incredible. And the DLC was way ahead of the curve on LLM criticism, this was from a couple years ago!

Stephen Totilo@stephentotilo.bsky.social

To be clear: Alan Wake 2: Lake House DLC is a timely must-play - A scientist uses rows of automated typewriters to try to artificially generate Alan Wake-style magical writing - Scientist worries that if artists are mostly left-leaning, and the art becomes real, they NEED some right-wing artists

If you ever see a sentence like "Five decisions stay with people" on my blog, that would be a duress signal. I've probably been kidnapped -- come save me

rain 🌦️@sunshowers.io

I would be ashamed to put out a post on my personal blog which had a sentence and diagram like this. For a trillion dollar company to put something like this out is something else

When I report an ADA issue, the city now asks if I'm disabled and for my PII. How is this not a breach of confidentiality? And what does it matter? In this case a sidewalk was closed with no detour for wheelchair users. Wheelchair users are forced into the street, what does it matter who I am?

One of my friends just started getting around by bike more lately and told my wife "I see why you hate cars so much now." People just don't get it till they've experienced it.

Alternatively you can think it's lame because you don't want to "share the road" with the kind of person who would drive this in your city

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

Also the everyone is 12 theory remains undefeated. You want a car that can do s small amount of flight off a big bump? Sure you do, you're 12

This thread is really interesting in that it shows the pathology of trying to regulate form relative to function. I'm sure some urbanist on here has also done this for SUVs/pickups skirting around CAFE laws a la "this is a light truck" and you get the new 9ton hummer EV

The weapon on the left is a short barreled rifle. Until today, it was illegal to own or make without registering. The weapon on the right is an AR-15 pistol. It is no more restricted than any other kind of firearm. There is no meaningful difference between these weapons.

What's more wild is later on he mentions that people won't ship something "unsafe," but points to car companies as an example of an industry that doesn't ship unsafe things? What the fuck? Do you know how many people die from cars every year Jensen?

World Car-Free Day is celebrated every year on 22nd September. For me, cycling is more than just a way to get around it gives me the freedom to explore, discover new places. So, why not leave the car behind, get on your bike, and discover where the road takes you? Every ride makes a difference!

To all who saw this: I'm deeply sorry for being jerrified and need to spend more time to reflect on the kinds of posters I interact with

This is like that mega-thread of bad-bike racks but for the shitty chairs you find in places you'd like to frequent but can't because they make you ache after the age of 22 It's not hostile architecture but it's like, lower-spine antagonistic architecture

I will vote for any political candidate who vows to ban these chairs.

Speeding doesn't actually save you meaningful time. All it really accomplishes is aggressively increasing the chances that you kill yourself or someone else outside your vehicle. It's a mathematically flawed, entirely selfish risk.

A friend of mine works in AI and thinks bad things are about to happen. He sold his home and moved his family out the country. He said that if you own a home in a walkable San Francisco neighborhood near a taqueria with good veggie options, you should sell your home for super cheap right now.

Hey drivers: I need you to understand that when you get to an intersection and there's a cyclist crossing in front of you, even if YOU know you see them, there's a good chance THEY don't know you do. Come to a fucking stop till they cross. Stop fucking rolling at them. Fucksake.

Lets all in the cycling community pour one out for ceej here: there's still a chance he can store ten, maybe even ELEVEN, bicycles in his future.
