Having watched The Odyssey, it's clear that Nolan was in a no win situation with the Polyphemus segment. Its function to provide the moment where, through his cleverness and hubris, Odysseus cements his downfall. But the movie recasts the Horse as that moment. But he can't cut it. So it's just there
The thing that baffles me is, who are these guys supposed to be? Am I supposed to know them? The whole point of guys talking about Star Wars on the internet is building parasocial relationships. You can't AI your way to parasocial relationships.
Modern TVs are great. This one shows me an AI generated ad for Maul - Shadow Lord as soon as I turn it on
People don't understand how absolutely crucial the skits are to MST3K. Riffing in movies isn't as funny if you don't have a relationship to the people doing the riffing. The skits build the audience's relationship to the bots so that, when the movie is on, you're with your friends.
also people like to shit on the MST3k skits? aww. ☹️ (and ewwww)

Spider-Man will always work in every visual medium because (a) he is a Normal Teenager with Normal Problems and Secret Gifts, and (b) swinging between skyscrapers in daylight is awesome. What’s weird is that other superheroes are billionaires and aliens who either fly or prowl around at nighttime
I'm seeing a lot of SUPERHERO MOVIES ARE BACK posts in the wake of #BrandNewDay's success. Spider-Man movies were breaking box office records well before the MCU existed. They are a cinema phenomenon onto themselves, because Spider-Man is a singularly resonant and relatable character.

"We can't address this until people stop annoying me on the internet" seems to be the driving philosophy at The Atlantic and most editorial pages.
I agree that leftists on social media can be too glib about how upsetting it is to see people suffering on the streets. That is, however, roughly 198th on my list of priorities on this issue. "we can't address this until people stop annoying me on the internet" is fucking asinine and *everywhere*

there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5
Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”

*standing up on the plane* LISTEN UP The real reason that Doctor Who has been floundering for so long is that the format was perfected in 2014 when Peter Capaldi took the role and the show fully deconstructed itself into the fullest expression of what Doctor Who is and you just can't follow that
*standing up on the plane* ALL RIGHT STRAIGHT PEOPLE LISTEN UP. there's this really cool card game called magic the gathering where you and your friends have wizard duels and cast spells and shit and it's awesome but the BEST way to play is to mill your opponent out. what's mill? i'm glad you asked

It is always the exact same tantrum, too, delivered in the exact same manner, by the exact same people. You don't need to be a master of pattern recognition to put it together!
It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

The most radicalizing thing about this era is listening to the most powerful people in the world speak about any subject whatsoever. gizmodo.com/elon-musk-ec...
Jacob Gellar still out here being the best to ever do it
Five years ago, I ran across a piece of stock footage that defied all conventions. It was beautiful and textured. It was *memorable*. But what can this single video tell us, in context of an entire industry designed to be generic? youtu.be/k3bkCTy9rLk

mass layoffs at Pixar despite Toy Story 5 about to cross $1 billion at the box office. there is simply no amount of money that will make corporations happy enough to not upend people’s lives.
