Shameless plug: This week on @tender_subject, we slice into one of the big cultural artifacts of the Tender Subject canon, Peter Greenaway's gorgeous film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover with @TheLitCritGuy. Join us for John Berger, haute cuisine, fashion, Brecht and more!

Made it. Read all 64 of the horus Heresy novels but what's most notable about the finale of this three volume novel is the command of perspective and narrative tense. Truly a wild choice to have the final climatic battle and the longest chapter in the book narrated entirely in second person.

89. Dan Abnett, "The End and the Death Volume Three" We've done it. We made it to an ending and also the beginning of the true grim darkness of the far future.

While it is easy (and fun!) to be cynical about all of these books I found it deeply impactful just how sincerely this last novel commits to the role of imagination as the thing that marks human beings as being irreducibly utopian creatures.

It feels like some of you actually should have Jon on to talk about this lol

Invite me on your podcast because I need to talk about what it's like to read 64 Warhammer novels in six months

There's something very bold about this - especially given the ways in which the novel as form is invested in a particular idea of both space and temporality but Abnett is willing to experiment with what happens when both of those formal constraints collapse into an eternal present.

Jon@thelitcritguy.bsky.social

88. Dan Abnett, "The End and the Death Volume Two" I'm so close. I'm so so so close to being done with this series. But this is my favorite sequel to Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeutics.

If you want to understand the horus Heresy you absolutely need to know the work of Alfred Tennyson, Emily Dickinson and Amiri Baraka as well as the Rider–Waite Tarot. Dan Abnett who the hell do you think you are.

Jon@thelitcritguy.bsky.social

87. Dan Abnett, "The End and the Death Volume One" - I'm sorry I wasn't expecting this, a novel in which the climax depends on interpretation of the tarot, library research and the history of poetry. Formally this is so maximalist Abnett is pushing the story into near modernist territory.

That MTG essay I wrote for Typebar earlier this year contained the phrase "Fortnite-ification" and the definition is basically the worst thing that culture can possibly do

My very good friends/two of the writers I admire most in the world have finally unleashed the newest addition to the gothic marxism syllabus. Happy early Halloween to those interested in the spectrality of the material

THE DEVILS has kind of been marketed as a HARDCORE, NASTY MOVIE, FINALLY UNLEASHED!!! and it is that sometimes, but you'll also want to go watch this movie for the same reason you'd watch a film of such pristine art direction as BARRY LYNDON. It's one of the most beautiful films ever made.

This piece isn't about putting forward a prospective route - there isn't a "right way" but merely some profane illumination to the dark ways of being red... 👻

I've been listening to back episodes of @horrorvanguard.bsky.social to fill the void and during the Robocop episode there's snippets of protest advice and links for bail funds and it reminds me how beautiful the George Floyd uprising was. Tearing up at it. We really do have a world to win

New from me in @liberalcurrents.com: how the evolution of the right from the Years of Lead through to the Turner Diaries through to discords of 14 year old giggling over gore pics got us to the point where there was almost a livestreamed execution:
