This evening’s talk venue. I discovered in Elle from Norfolk Rivers Trust’s excellent talk that I identify as a chalk stream tributary: ‘Consistently cold and generally rather shallow.’

On 13th October, in the knowledge that I would bankroll her babies’ first few weeks, renowned benefits cheat Gertrude hatched a further 10 ducklings in my garden. Having reached almost 2 weeks of age, and survived Austen and Boelo, they may just make it, against all the evolutionary odds…

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

Aw thank you Lucy x

Can confirm: if you're tackling six hours of driving then The Meaning of Geese by @themarshtit.bsky.social is both perfect length & perfect company

This hapless juvenile song thrush doubtless flew south from Scandinavia on the first harsh wind of winter, only to become a sparrowhawk’s meal on arrival. So doing it has passed its Nordic proteins, carbon, water and stories one step further on the complex cobweb of life.

Fleabanes, Mexican and Guernsey Erigeron karvinskianus E. sumatrensis So many stories of exploration, trade, colonialism and agricultural industrialisation written in their common and scientific names and their modern geographical distribution.

Same view, fifteen minutes apart. The first as I frantically got my laundry in. Swifts overhead, in a great swirl of house martins. Doubtless the last swifts I’ll see here this year. Go safely wild ones.

I don't want to have to engage in protest. I'd rather just get on with my research, and I found it quite emotional But while my government is considering pouring more fuel on the fires, despite everything we know and everything we're experiencing, what else am I supposed to do?

Scientists on Survival@scientistsonsurviv.bsky.social

1/ Today Scientists on Survival visited the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero to remind the government of the scientific facts. New oil and gas 🛢️ = more fire 🔥, more extreme weather ⛈️, more food shortages🚫 and more death ☠️. For more details see thread🧵...

NNNS are saddened to hear that Carl Chapman passed away on Friday. Carl made a massive contribution to the Society, as a Trustee, Chairman & through the creation of the Liaison Committee (which he also chaired)- a body that helped strengthen links between NNNS and other local wildlife charities. 1/x

Asteraceae doing the heavy lifting for this week’s #wildflowerhour #stillflowering challenge: musk thistle (with painted lady caterpillar) on chalk grassland, Canadian goldenrod, wall lettuce (in this case door lettuce) and (not Asteraceae) entangled tendrils of tufted vetch and hedge bindweed.

Great idea. One of the most inspiring books when I was young, then I was lucky enough to get to know Keith in person, then later to employ Alan's daughter! Any young birders need this book.

Saturday giveaway time! I picked a copy of the (still brilliant) Macmillan Guide to Bird Identification at Cley village fete & like the last time, I want to give this copy to a really keen young birder (18 or under). Drop me a DM - or reply here - & Lynnette will pick a name from a hat. #ukbirding
