Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

The obvious answer here is, don't have these people in your life. If they are family that you don't want to cut out (you can and should cut the worst ones), you can be emotionally distant from them because they are expecting it of you. Build community with people who allow you to be you.

Wondering if this will make people realize that maybe government regulation could be a good thing but not going to hold my breath.
my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵) www.consumerreports.org/lead/protein...

@npr.org mentioned just today how Trump was "unhappy" with Israel bombing Hamas officials in Doha, capital of Qatar, the US ally hosting mediation talks put on by the US, but 1) no mention of what he plans to DO ABOUT IT.

This article on on NYC landlords unable to pay their expenses gives a foretaste of what I suspect the pushback to a rent freeze is going to look like. www.thecity.nyc/2025/08/07/b...

Paramount just paid Trump a bribe for merger approval. When Democrats retake power, I’ll be first in line calling for federal charges. In the meantime, state prosecutors should make the corporate execs who sold out our democracy answer in court, today.
Paramount agrees to pay Trump $16 million, clearing way for multibillion-dollar merger
Like when they are completely neutral regarding Trump's blatant corruption being a benefit for Middle East relationships, relative to Biden. Thanks, NPR! www.npr.org/transcripts/...
Gentle reminder: at NPR we're not here to tell you what to think (you have your own brain for that) ; we're here to tell what to think about.
Exactly. By this definition, it's only corruption if Trump explicitly says, "thank you for this plane, I will now favor you with _." What if he's already given them something we don't know about???
This comes very close to suggesting that corruption is only corruption if it's self-reported. I'm not sure even a defense lawyer would make that argument.
Basically, when conservatives have found being anti-science to be politically expedient and made it a defining characteristic, you can't take their arguments of viewpoint diversity in good faith, especially given their other central tenet of perpetual victimhood.
When Republicans take power do they expand "viewpoint diversity"? No. They purge scientists, delete data and promote their own mediocre minds. If you support Trump you are signaling membership in a movement that *hates* science, science is not obligated to pretend otherwise. bsky.app/profile/popu...

Well said. The call for 'view point diversity' is just a smoke screen for ejecting and rejecting all the work done on racism, sexism, homophobia etc. If they truly believed in VPD they would be welcoming people from across the world to share their view points.

anyway as always if you want to read books by a British author who isn’t a raging bigot there’s Terry Pratchett’s Discworld I wrote a thread about it and everything
A DISCWORLD PRIMER* *or, why should I read this thing that everyone keeps going on about? Come on in, sit down, pull up a chair. If you have followup questions, feel free to ask me or @ankhmorporkcity.watch, we're always happy to help. (1/a lot, idk, we'll figure this out as we go)
Had a serious talk with my dad in 2020 and it just resulted in my cutting him out of my life. Frankly I'm better off, but there was no convincing him.
i think about all the people that have friends and family who voted for trump but were unwilling to make things uncomfortable and i just wonder if those relationships are worth all this

Great piece from Bob Kuttner. The American Medical Association has *copyrights* on the diagnostic codes doctors and hospitals use to designate patient ailments and receive reimbursement. The AMA makes $300 million a year off this. WTF? prospect.org/health/2025-...

cannot overstate the degree to which i am negatively polarized against nimbys. like, if you go to a public meeting to speak against lower cost housing i think the city should eminent domain your house and your house specifically
The first several speakers at this morning's comprehensive plan meeting have been longtime homeowners in Seattle's wealthy Madrona neighborhood, arguing that a two-block "neighborhood center" where some apartments will be allowed, saying it will destroy their neighborhood.

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.
