Here are my concerns: 1. ending violence against women and children 2. reforming the legal system to better recognize (and protect families from) emotional abuse 3. anti-racism 4. public records law 5. crochet [originally tweeted Nov 6, 2018]

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

I used to love picking up old scifi paperbacks but anything from the 1950s-1970s you can't turn a page without reading slurs you forgot existed. Like the author predicted reality tv and video phones but assumed we'd still be openly racist.

Things I enjoy in science fiction: * spaceships * artificial (or just somehow really different) intelligences * interesting social commentary Things I tend not to enjoy: * dark/gritty stuff (everyone is having a bad time & so am I) * sexism/bigotry/etc (this rules out a lot of "classic" sci-fi)

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.

"understanding all political outcomes: the fivethirtyeight dot com story"

very odd to me that a lot of these guys think that because they got some numbers right they have therefore unlocked the door to understanding all political outcomes

If you would try to win by abandoning trans people (or any targeted group) you can save this “we need to win” talk; there is no “we.” I am about solidarity, and you have chosen anti-solidarity. You are not any “we” I recognize. You are the enemy I’m trying to defeat. Beating you is how my “we” wins.

I’d say we will continue to have such boutique issues until we stop seeing human rights as a boutique issue—until the rest of us agree to stand in solidarity with all humans, instead of trying the morally and practically failed strategy of seeking the approval of those who would exclude some.

Something very important to figure out before Jan 20, 2029 is whether, when a new President is inaugurated, they will control the computer system at GSA (i.e. doors to federal buildings) and Treasury payments system or if those systems will be somehow in the hands of DOGE cronies

I think all you need to know about Drazan is that her solution to Oregonians living on the street would be to "audit homeless spending" and establish "accountability and metrics" Kotek sucks and won't fund schools but audits aren't the solution to every problem

Very revealing moment for the press here. The unstated premise of this question is they cannot understand how Democrats are different from Republicans. That Democrats are capable of abstract, critical thought, and Republicans just use their mouths to reflexively echo.

This was such a great answer from Abdul El-Sayed about his previous criticisms of President Obama.

Kind of a buried lede in the results of this Supreme Court approval rating poll from Marquette: Overall support for Supreme Court expansion, which even Democratic politicians were dismissing as "radical" just a few years ago, is now at 53 percent today.marquette.edu/2026/09/marq...

y'know what, the advantage of saying "super intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence" is everybody can tell how dumb it sounds and nobody will make the mistake of thinking the plagiarism machine has genuine thoughts or feelings

It's a pouty act of revenge. OpenAI clearly tried to solve every Millennium Problem and every "top ___ unsolved math problems" list, made a lot of genuine progress but couldn't get the brass rings, so they dumped their whole pile on the math community, snarling "you're so smart, you figure it out."

Blake C. Stacey@blakestacey.myatproto.social

Releasing so many results simultaneously is spamming the mathematical community into acceptance.

AI COMPANIES: “People who don’t use AI agents just aren’t aware of the vast power they possess to do anything.” NORMAL PEOPLE: “Wow, okay, wow. Sounds great. What can they do? Give me your top example.” AI COMPANIES: “The hardest task of all: Checking you into a flight!”

I do understand there are more uses than this. It’s just funny that every AI agent video is like, “All you have to do is give a bot all of your personal, banking, and medical information and soon you too will know when your kids have a little league game!” Sure, sounds great.

I just think they're selling personal assistants to folks who can't afford/don't want to pay a personal assistant. Thinking of every boss I ever had who couldn't be bothered to lift a finger to do anything normal, like making coffee or reading their own emails.
