September data for HadCRUT global temperature now available. 2026 (based on Jan-Sep) best estimate is second warmest in this record, but uncertainties overlap with all of 2023-2025 to some extent.

The distinction between the last 4 years comes mostly from differences in their Northern Hemisphere temperature anomalies. Their Southern Hemisphere anomalies are almost the same for the last 4 years.

The cut in maximum allowable visa refusal rate (from 10 to 5%) coupled with unexplained doubling of study visa refusals is a complete shitshow. Terrible for international applicants as universities can’t treat them as they should without risking losing right to recruit. wonkhe.com/blogs/who-pa...

wonkhe.comWho pays the price when universities cancel offers to protect refusal rates? As visa refusal rates climb, universities are revoking offers and cancelling CAS en masse to stay under the new BCA threshold. Jim Dickinson asks whether that’s lawful – and who ends up paying.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is beginning its 65th session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today. This is a critical meeting for the #IPCC, as the Panel must agree on both a budget for the Seventh Assessment Report and a timeline for delivery of the three Working Group reports. #AR7

Yesterday I hosted a screening of the People's Emergency Briefing in a local village hall. Over 80 people turned up on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon to find out the facts about the climate and nature emergency. Find a screening near you #nationalemergencybriefing www.nebriefing.org/screening-map

A minimum of 18.8ºC at the University of Reading Atmospheric Observatory this morning is well above the previous record (+16.7ºC) for the 30th of September. It is the second-warmest September night on record. The record from 1949 of 20.3ºC on the 5th of September still stands.

In Texas, the State is removing climate change courses from the core curriculum. They have decided that climate change is just too dangerous to teach the students. This is indoctrination. I wrote an oped about it in the SA Express-News. Gift link: www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...

Seems like this is still in the UK news...

There's lots of discussion in public & media about fuel price increases. Useful to know that (at least until the increases of the last week), inflation-adjusted fuel prices in the UK have stayed fairly flat for the last 26 years. Motorists have not been hit harder than the average person.

Sad to hear this, Joe was a lovely man

Rest in peace, Joe Harkness. I was shocked and gutted when I heard the news. He was a generous, inspirational teacher and such an important writer. He was brutally honest, inclusive and funny too. When I interviewed him last summer (below) he was so full of life. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Off to bed - thinking of Joe Harkness and all of those battling - the world as illustrated by the media and politics is not the same world as the one where so many are ready to listen to you

People involved in family court cases in Norfolk can now access free guidance and advice through a new website hosted by UEA. The Norfolk Family Courts information website is designed to help local families better understand the family justice system and access support where needed.

My 3-panel SOI graph inadvertently highlights multidecadal variations in ENSO activity. Relatively active in the top/bottom panels, more quiescent in the middle panel.
