Seba Gomez has 3 goals in his last 5 appearances, each coming as a halftime sub. Prior to those 3 halftime subs, the previous time when he came on as a halftime sub he also got an assist. He’s got 4 goal contributions (3g, 1a) in his last 8 appearances (427 minutes)

Still, Georgi Minoungou is going to continue to be the player I compare him to most because they play similar positions and roles, and Minoungou’s departure is a big part of why Gomez has gotten this opportunity. Gomez has 3g, 2a to Minoungou’s 1g, 2a in about 1/2 the MLS minutes

Gomez is 4 years younger. The two had VERY similar production in MLSNP before moving to MLS, and not only is it good to see Seba kick on like he has given the opportunity, but it’s also great business from the Sounders to sell high on Georgi and then upgrade from within.

I thiiiink Isak makes the back post run to keep the shot open for Gakpo, since Gakpo’s shot rather than passing basically every time he’s been in a similar spot today. That just happened to be the one time he didn’t try a shot himself

Another outstanding finish, this time by Lexington SC's Braudilio Rodrigues, to make it a one-goal game again against Phoenix Rising FC. Glimmer of hope again for Oakland Roots SC. #USL-C

Apples. They’re so good, and they’re always coming up with new ones, age the new ones are good too. You can just go to the store and try an apple you’ve never heard of or had before

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

On an ideal group: “we’ll find out after this three-game week. It’s not ideal. I would have preferred to have found some better solutions … but Seba Gomez is coming on strong … I’ve got to ensure that for each game … there has to be some rotation, because there’s 3 games against 3 top teams.”

this is a stat that means basically nothing, but Snyder Brunell is tied for the greatest distance covered per 90 minutes in MLS at 12 km, per SofaScore. FWIW, all of Seattle’s CMs are within 0.7 km of each other with Cristian at 11.3 km.

Sebastian Gomez comes in at 25th on the list at 11.5 km, the third highest mark for a Sounders player - Dotson’s the second highest at 14th with 11.7 km - if there’s any question beyond his attacking contributions as to why Schmetzer likes the kid so much.

I don’t know enough about MLS teams that aren’t the Sounders to have Strong Opinions on the 22u22 list, but I do feel pretty confident that I’d take Snyder Brunell over any of the mids placed 18-22 on the list.

Same for Stu Hawkins. I’m not sure how big of a role Mark Bronnik will have, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he makes a case for himself as well. Could be a pretty substantial youth movement for the Sounders first team next season.

did your brain melt this summer as Fox News ran 8+ hours of Sophie Cunningham/TERF coverage? to you I present the many trans fans, affirming parents of trans kids, and WNBA players who are pro-Black, pro-trans, pro-woman. “The majority of the fanbase is standing up saying: ‘No, this isn’t right.’”

I would die for the Old Spaghetti Factory and Azteca. Are they good? I have no comment, but they are load-bearing elements of my love for food and restaurants

Helen Rosner@hels.bsky.social

I don’t want to harp on this too hard but reducing things to “food” evinces a pretty shallow understanding of what a restaurant is (and how enjoyment functions). Do you have a favorite dish or favorite restaurant colored by nostalgia? Congratulations, the food is less important than the emotion.

There are going to be so many of a particular sort of accident if this shit ever actually hits the streets that they’ll need to come up with a new term for “autoerotic asphyxiation”

This is pretty much where I landed trying to think through rotation for this game, I just wasn’t sure if Ferreira was ready to start just yet. Pretty nice to be able to make 5 changes and still potentially have such a strong lineup.

Between the schedule shift and the (still just expected, I think) move to more regional divisions, the changes to how teams play over the next few seasons will be really interesting to watch.

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

But also, grand scheme, this is pretty normal 15 year-old behavior. Getting better at Spanish specifically to be able to talk about Star Wars in our Spanish class where we could talk as much as we want while the teacher wasn’t talking as long as it was in Spanish was probably weirder behavior.

All six remaining games are against teams that can definitely be a problem, but between Seattle’s performances and those of the teams they’re playing all six games feel decidedly winnable, or at the very least like games they could get results from.

Just shy of two months removed from suffering their 8th consecutive league loss - an embarrassing home defeat to Austin FC - the Sounders now find themselves unbeaten in 9, on a 4-game winning streak, and could conceivably be in touching distance of 4th in the west a week from now. Wild turnaround
