NEW PAPER in @lancetmicrobe.bsky.social! We show that recent household transmission makes a limited contribution to overall TB burden Should motivate greater focus on social protection and interrupting transmission in indoor congregate settings Thanks to coauthors - particularly Martha Chipinduro

Good! The first in a string of critical elections over the next few days
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
Is it possible, for each study, to estimate uncertainty around where the inflection point is, then to take these point estimates with their associated confidence intervals, and test for heterogeneity, as you would in a meta analysis? #statsky
Statistical friends, imagine you had data on the association betwen two continuous variables across a number of different settings Slope levels off at some point What would the best approach to testing whether the inflection point differed between settings? #statsky

This is really terrible news. Helen was one of the best. Helen Branswell, whose reporting on infectious diseases and public health drew acclaim, dies at 69 www.statnews.com/2026/10/13/h... via @statnews.com

As well as being daft, for the technical reasons Dan Neidle lays out, the policy tells us an awful lot about the priorities of the Tory Party
Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.
This recording of Curtis Flowers singing 'I won't complain' is extraordinary

“Aiding and abetting foodborne illness may be lettuce’s biggest offense. But it doesn’t have much else going for it, either, and there’s a reasonably strong case that we would be better off without it.”
I find the argument made here problematic. Either it is ethical to randomise to a placebo or it isn't. I'd do response adaptive randomisation.

We all know the long banned imprisonment for public protection sentence is inhumane. Another review will just kick the can down the road yet again. All Andy Burnham need to do is introduce a bill to re-sentence prisoners still serving IPPs. By me. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

At the moment, people on Health & Care Worker Visa have no recourse to public funds. Why deny social security if they e.g. injure themselves at work? Treating carers with respect should include looking after them if they fall on hard times. Current rules deeply exploitative @stellacreasy.bsky.social
Has anyone got this paper in pdf? #TBSky

Raising the personal allowance is very poorly targeted Loads of the money will go to people who are already comfortably off, and households where one or more workers earn less than the current threshold get little or nothing Much better to raise universal credit, I would have thought?
Mr Burnham seems to have suggested: - raising income tax personal allowance; - much more spending on social care; - more defence spending (Healey as ChX); - no end to triple lock; - keeping to fiscal rules; - etc Either he can’t deliver this or we’re in for big tax hikes

I had a lovely time attending the EEPE genetic epidemiology course - learned loads. Thanks to @uclpophealthsci.bsky.social for funding my attendance - also green travel - via a Catalyst Award
Why is this not standard? I would also love the option to opt out of copy editing So many wasted hours changing tuberculosis back to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and vice versa ...
The sweet, sweet joy of discovering that a journal has created a 'redline PDF' for you so you can see the changes they've made to your paper when you're checking the proofs. 🎉
