anyone I know familiar with police procedures in the US? If there's a non-suspicious death, how is it treated? I think in the UK there's an inquest process for all deaths but is there a standard equivalent in the US or does it vary hugely by state?

Today's Breath and Bone quote: "I shrieked warning, more a falcon's cry than a crow's, but Helthew rolled aside and seized the spear embedded in the turf, came up hand over hand, leaning, hanging from it, kicked hard and sent the robber reeling back ..."

I don't think Wolfcub was expecting a rant that went all the way into why HP printers suck, but she asked me how I listen to music and she's very patient with her old dad at least. The Chosen One might well have just walked away halfway through.

And yet, the actual plastic 2 inch ww2 soldiers I played with as a kid were so well used by me. I could dump them in a bag and take them on holiday too. Far more sturdy than plastic 40k mini, far cheaper so I had loads. My son would love them too but clearly you can't buy stuff like that any more.

Plastic toy soldiers. By, like... leaps and bounds.

We're doing some rearranging in the house and have come to the inescapable conclusion that we need to be rich enough to have a dedicated library. There really is nothing else for it.

Struggling for motivation today while the rain hammers on my roof. Still, I've got standing in a field for hours tomorrow to look forward, then tennis in 40mph gusts on sunday...

Solar farms in the Gobi are cutting dust storms. A study of 17 farms found the panels slow surface winds by more than 9% and make soil up to 17% less erodible, reducing springtime dust by about 352,000 tonnes a month. RenewEconomy buff.ly/bambHT8 #ShareGoodNewsToo

Lovely, ten mins of drills last night and any progress my ankle's made over the last month or so seems to have been undone. Almost like the exercises the physio gave me were never going to be enough.

Ugh, this damn cold won't go away. Pretty sure it's not covid, but it is leaving me knackered and queasy by the end of each day. Ibuprofen has helped but even by my standards I've taken a lot of those in the last few weeks.

If closing surely the least expensive radio channel the BBC has (run by a tiny number of people, broadcasting the work of mainly dead people), bothers you, then why not sign this petition you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Not sure how much money closing Radio 4 extra will save. I am happy to forgo my £22 a year from repeat fees if that helps.

important to remember that this was manslaughter, not just some natural accident. it was caused by lazy management trying to save money by dumping mining waste in the wrong place #aberfan

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Imagine what a weapons-grade piece of shit you’d have to be to pull what Ramaswamy is trying here. Truly despicable, even by the standards of the Republican Party in 2026.

Dr. Amy Acton's campaign is out with a statement:

Why does every website want me to come up with a pin passcode to log in? How is a 6 or 7 digit number going to be safer than my usual 11 or 12 digit mix password that I can't even remember most of the time?

"Oh our system is designed to reject invoices that don't quote an entirely separate postal address to either of the ones we quote on paperwork, despite the fact you're emailing it to us anyway." A sentence intelligent people are forced to come out because companies are frequently a bit insane.

Asking my followers to please, take a minute out of your day and drop a public comment at the link that supports continuing to count Long Covid and ME in this survey. This is vital to people like me. Please help!

The Sick Times@thesicktimes.org

The CDC might take away a key data source on Long COVID and ME. You have until this Tuesday, October 20, to tell them why that would be a mistake. The advocacy group Solve ME has put together a script that people can use to leave a comment: solvecfs.org/cdc-me-cfs-l...

1) I thought we all knew that bird people are even worse than horse people (and only slightly behind gun people) in this department. Beware. 2) Editor is not the same role as fact-checker. 3) What a shitty thing to say when his editor has probably stopped him showing his arse a hundred other ways.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

OK, I'm willing to admit that maybe sleeping well at any point this last week might have been beneficial to my tennis. I'm still pretty cross at myself for how feebly I slumped today however.

I did suggest that France might not be the perfect place for a last minute city break for my elderly in-laws but was advise to pipe down and now worry them. So there's that.

Belatedly getting into s3 of Colin from accounts and loving it. Reminds me that TV execs often just need to give money to clever people with a weird idea and leave them to it.

Useless royal mail. They leave a card because they need a signature. Follow details on card to learn that they automatically try to redeliver the next working day. Why not write that on the card?!
