I’m so glad this happened AFTER my work end of year “share your biggest accomplishments” thing. HR would have been…confused

I’ve known how to parallel park a lot longer than I’ve known about the RuPaul how to parallel park video, but I still think of that video every time I parallel park. That’s influence right there.

Hey @gilead.com this is what Tulsa, Oklahoma thinks about HIV prevention! Take notes!! 👀 Health care is a human right! It’s time to make long-acting PrEP more accessible/affordable around the world!! #tulsapride #lenacapavir #peopleoverprofit #gileadsciences #2shots$40everywhere @tbfighters.org

Just booked flights out to California to help my cousin with her newborn baby so she won’t have to fly solo with a 4-week-old I’m afraid of babies and know nothing about newborn care. I’m sure this will go great.

(Her husband is a freelancer and has to go out of town for work that was contracted quite a while ago and can’t get out of and her baby was very late and was supposed be older by then. Just so it’s clear it’s not a terrible husband situation)

Manchester’s back to back University Challenge wins while I was a student there has always been a huge point of pride for me. Now I have to find something else about my college to be proud of. Ugh.

Two University of Leicester students speak out over ‘absurd’ and ‘Orwellian’ decision by the BBC and ITV Studios to edit out pride pins worn on University Challenge

leicester.newsBBC edits out pride pins on University Challenge in ‘Orwellian’ move* * * This story was published by **The Leicester Gazette** : a local, independent newspaper about Leicestershire. 1,000 people have already joined our community. Just use those buttons below to download our app and **sign up for free**. * * * Astrophysics student Samuel Carlier and History student Emmeline Hague-Wright were shocked to find that their LGBTQ+ pride pins had been edited out of their University Challenge appearance earlier this year. The episode, initially scheduled for BBC Two on 24 August, was delayed twice before airing on 7 September 2026. The pins showed the progressive LGBTQ+ pride flag, the bisexual pride flag and a rainbow feather. Speaking to the Leicester Gazette, Sam said: “Living in a liberal democracy and having the state broadcaster tell you ‘we’re editing how you look’, seems very Orwellian.” Sam described the choice to remove the pins before broadcast as “weird” and “absurd”. He said: “[Censoring] that seemed weird. If I had worn a rainbow shirt, would they have censored that? If the idea is to keep things impartial, where is that line in the sand?” A side by-side image of Sam wearing the pin and with it having been digitally removed. Photograph: supplied Sam contacted the BBC to try to understand why his pins had been edited out. He told the Gazette: “The BBC people said they’d ring me, and I chased them, they just said go to the complaints website and file a complaint there, that’s what I did.” Since then, Sam hasn’t had a response from the BBC as to why his pins were removed. After the episode had aired, Sam noted that his shirt ‘melted’ into itself occasionally, as a result of the editing. Photograph: supplied ## Students believe the decision was made following online transphobia Emmeline was also shocked when she found out that the feather pin she wore was due to be removed from the episode she was in. It was understood by Emmeline that there was online transphobia in response to previous episode of University Challenge, and she had been contacted by the BBC, anticipating support from the broadcaster. When the BBC contacted her, instead of an offer of support, she was told her pin was going to be removed. “At first it was mostly confusion,” she said. “I heard that they had received a lot of nastiness online from people and I thought they were going to call me to say ‘we have support services if needed,’ and that wasn't what I got at all.” Instead, Emmeline was notified that the episodes were going to be delayed. “It was out of left field, I was confused for a while,” she said. “This entire delay has been because of a feather and two badges on a teammate that were basically impossible [for viewers] to see.” Emmeline had expressed her frustrations with the repeated delays from the BBC, spanning from mid-July to early-September. She said: “We were announced on the website and then delayed again, and then announced on the website a second time, and delayed even further. Speaking about the removal, she said: “It takes a lot of time” she said. “Making it [the edit] look good would be even more expensive and time-consuming. It seems like drastically a lot of effort.” ## Join the conversation Our app is more than just a way to keep up – it's a gateway to award-winning journalism and the local community. __Want to support our work?__ Click here for membership__.__ ## Wider criticism on LGBTQ+ support The pins Sam wore during the episode. Photograph: supplied According to leading LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall UK, two in five LGBTQ+ students will hide their identities at university for fear of discrimination. Stonewall has reported that more than 36 per cent of trans students have received hostile conduct from university staff due to their gender identity. Reflecting on the digital removal of the pins, Sam spoke about how disheartening the choice was. He said: “There was maybe like a span of eight years where someone could be uncontroversially out in the open queer – now that’s gone again.” he said. The BBC has also been widely criticised for ‘an attack on the LGBTQ+ community’ by pulling its involvement with the popular show, RuPaul's Drag Race. The broadcaster pulled its involvement in September following “significant financial pressures” as the reason for axing their involvement. The criticism follows another recent controversial edit by the BBC. On its hit show, Strictly Come Dancing, a decision was made to edit out ‘Protect the Dolls’ from contestant Bethany Antonia’s T-shirt. It’s a slogan which has become widely used to support the rights of trans women. The BBC defended their decision, saying the changes were made to meet editorial guidelines. It comes as the LGBTQ+ community has faced challenges amid an increasingly less tolerant political climate. ## What the BBC had to say When we asked them about editing out the pins worn by Leicester’s University Challenge team, a BBC spokesperson said: “In line with our editorial guidelines, we advise that no badges, flags, and emblems or symbols are worn or visible during filming, along with clothing with obvious branding or slogans. If such items are not removed for any reason then a decision is made between the programme makers and the BBC regarding any edits to the programme.” The BBC said the delays to the episode were unrelated to the decision to edit out the pins. A spokesperson for ITV Studios said: “University Challenge is an entertainment quiz show and is made in accordance with the BBC Editorial Guidelines requirements for impartiality.” The University of Leicester refused to comment on the matter. * * * **Before you go…** We’ve recently surpassed 1,000 subscribers, which is amazing considering we’re a small team on a shoestring budget. Sometimes simply knowing your friend is in Ohio living her Skyline Chili dreams makes you crave chili enough to go to the grocery store at 8:45am

It’s been 14 years since President Obama stood in my high school auditorium and said that as a nation we are failing to meet our obligations to our children and to each other and we need to do something to change The child that committed this crime was two years old when that happened.

There’s no way to know how many children haven’t died because of the tireless work of advocates in the last 14 years. I can only hope that number is more than the ones who did.

Thank you to everyone on #knitsky 🧶 who told me I was overthinking the bead thing.

Tori ✨@tori.dftba.social

Okay #KnitSky 🧶 I need opinions on if these beads are the correct beads. I couldn’t find pink square ones so I went with round, but I think they’re too big compared to the blue. Pattern is Fashion Top by Pope Vergara. The blue beads will be the orange and the gold will be the white.

Ran out of yarn on my active knitting project and by some weird fluke have no other active projects and nothing in the queue… Do I go rescue something from WIP jail, or find a project for some stash yarn? 🧶 No ideas for either path forward honestly

Me: Dropout 24/7 is perfect for a sick day. Remove the burden of choosing what to watch! @dropout.tv: here, watch World of Tomorrow with your fever. It will be good for you and not make you spiral about the nature of your existence at all.

Was agonizing over whether I’m sick enough to take a sick day and decided to just go with day care rules - I’ll be back when I’m fever-free for 24 hours What is an office job if not grown up daycare?

This is not a “vaccine trial”. It is knowingly withholding the standard of care from vulnerable children whose lives are deemed less valuable to see if the number that will die if the US fully withdraws support is acceptable.

Rachel Fairbank@sweetsciencewriter.bsky.social

“The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage.” No words. I am speechless. This violates all ethical boundaries.

This author can die alone on that hill. We worked so hard to make Autumn a season of joy and being cute instead of one filled with dread from the impending cold and we need all the joy we can get these days That said, apples, cinnamon and nutmeg is the best fall flavor. Pumpkin is overdone.

Tried on all my hand knit sweaters to see if there are any I want to rework so I wear them more. Out of 17 sweaters, one needs actual modifications, and one might be fixed with a re-block Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be Don’t ask how many I’ve worn without all of the ends woven in 🧶

I’m feeling very petty today. I might go into my coworker’s spreadsheet and replace all the ai-generated xlookups with index/match and vlookups She swears that she understands them because the ai gave her an explanation, but she still calls me to fix it when it breaks.

This is a classic Voughtism: we have not eliminated the program - it still exists. It is just not distributing any resources.

I wish my dog was a cuddly little guy Instead he is a gentlemen. He sits with perfect posture at exactly arms length away and demands pets from a distance I tried to explain he would get more attention if he were closer but he refuses to learn English.

I genuinely thought every single possible bead existed and could be purchased somewhere I’m starting to think every single bead exists and can be purchased somewhere except the one specific bead I want

Please I just need opaque 3mm cube beads in a medium pink (not orange-leaning or salmony). These must exist somewhere.

During landing my AirPods fell on the floor and slid all the way to the front of the plane and now I need to figure out how to retrieve them once we’re done taxiing. I’ve never been so nervous on an airplane.

I have had a lovely birthday and am very grateful for all the well-wishing. I am also the tiredest pizza baby in the whole wide world and need this plane to take off so I can go to sleep.

Man City being found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges is great news except for the part where I haven’t seen which charge they were not found guilty of and a girl is curious

I hope they get super relegated. Not just regular relegated, relegated so hard they’re playing Accrington Stanley.

If I’m being completely honest, the song that is most frequently relevant to my life is “Where Is My Hairbrush?” from VeggieTales

My office building is located in a semi-public sculpture garden, which means the Pokemon Go situation is excellent and this is the only thing making partial return to office semi-tolerable

Decided to be responsible and go to the doctor for a gross nail injury I got a week ago, and the good news is I get to keep my nail attached to my hand but the bad news is I forgot my uncrustable I was going to bring to the office for lunch.
