Actually I found it pretty easy to vote against the gimmick proposition that is untethered from any larger strategy regarding our public finances, perpetuates the belief we’re one weird trick away from a social democratic utopia, and that is backed by one of the most corrupt players in CA politics

I’m on a flight next to a guy who is listening to Seinfeld with no headphones and all I hear is the laughtrack and the worst bass noises of all time every 15 seconds and all I can think about is this.

You guys think he’s blasting some JJ Cale on the drive up?

Trump says weather has delayed his flight from Texas to Oklahoma so he’s driving the presidential limo there instead. Trump: “‘The Beast’ is going faster than it has ever gone before. It won't be long.”

Innumeracy is a great scourge upon our body politic

People living in the West have always had to care about water usage, we built an unsustainable system before we had data centers, and now these under-regulated guzzlers are worsening a crisis. Is Ag a bigger drain? Sure! But acting like data centers don’t impact the numbers is doing industry work PR

It’s fairly remarkable that once the boomers in CA got their free college, and bought a cheap home due to post-war building they just knocked out all of those support structures for everyone else. Free tuition, gone. Housing, banned. Property taxes, frozen. Generational level sociopathy

In 1978 California voters implemented a strict austerity plan into the state constitution that wrecked local governments. The state had to immediately bail out the schools. Voters are potentially going to wreck local governments even further this fall.

My favorite bit of stadium naming lore… August Busch wanted to name the Cardinals park after Budweiser. MLB said no to naming a stadium after a beer so he called it Busch Stadium and then 2 years later Busch beer hit the market

Craig Calcaterra@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social

Great American Ballpark is the best at this. Comerica was probably second. The beer names work independently because people have feelings about beer. The rest are pretty disposable. bsky.app/profile/this...

A friend was hosting bar trivia one night and I joined a random team of their friends. The theme for the night was “1994” and when the second question was about OJ it became apparent that I was the only one at the table who was /alive/ in 1994

The crown jewel of this whole thing, though, is Lighthaven. It's the former Rose Garden Inn in Berkeley, and it was bought by one of the rationalist charities in late 2022 with SBF's money, which was looted from FTX for them just before it collapsed.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

I know some people think it's unfair that Robert Reich gets dragged over this every single time he pops his head up online, but I personally think it's great. You shouldn't be able to live down the fact that you NIMBY'd a 4-plex in central Berkeley.

Doing a critical read of a quarter-wit‘s propaganda book is certainly a choice. Feels like you’re actually doing him a favor here by playing along with the fiction that his ideas merit good faith engagement. Even Rich Lowry doesn’t think Rich Lowry’s ideas merit good faith engagement.
