Oh hey another social media site. What is this, 2005? Alexandria, VA resident. Quickly becoming radicalized on local politics by Blue Sky. Shitposts are my own.

Just as a reminder: enough people will share that video clip of the degenerate saying degenerate things. There’s no obligation for YOU to share it again to add commentary. It’s out there, everyone saw it, lets vote and get them exiled from polite society.

I’m 30 minutes outside DC and we’re actually hiring in my department lol. DMs open if you have an urban planning background

NEW: "It’s been hell." "I’m dead inside." "I honestly don’t know if I will ever find work in the U.S. again, let alone D.C." "It’s akin to screaming into a void." What is going on with D.C.'s job market? Contributor Abi Newhouse investigated:

Send this to all your family outside DC who assume it’s just peachy. Seen this repeated over and over with so many people, including ones who aren’t even specialized or former Feds/contractors.

Just posted something on a work discussion that's my understanding of a the answer to a question that was asked and making it clear I'm not an expert and then added "Someone who is good a this..." and out of muscle memory almost typed the rest of the classic dril tweet about Yankee candles.

I lost the prompt but you know what else has improved in the last few decades? Heat pumps are cheaper and more accessible. Game changer for heating and cooling residences cheaper and more efficiently so we don’t make climate change worse by using more energy to adjust to it.

I mean, when’s the last time we discussed the architecture of Five Guys? It would be better if Five Guys was full of bejeweled columns and bas-reliefs depicting monstrous serpents. We should fear the Five Guys are five heads on one chthonic entity

Cheesecake Factory made a bold artistic choice and provoked a genuine emotion in the viewer. Love it or hate it, decorating a cheesecake restaurant to look like a pre-Sumerian ziggurat worshipping a cosmic squid is the core of what it means to be human

Cheesecake Factory Architect: The vibe I’m going for is “insane sultan sorcerer who keeps murdering his wives and constructs an enchanted palace designed to forever trap their souls”

It’s good that cheesecake factory is decorated like an occult temple to an eldritch deity. Any restaurant can feed you cheesecake, only Cheesecake Factory makes it feel like part of a ritual

The world right now feels like when I went down to LA to deal with my childhood bedroom after the earthquake. Everything formerly meaningful is in a pile on the floor and it's, OK, what's neither shameful nor broken beyond repair, and worth taking into the future, except it's every institution.

Also at least one of the whiskey drinks was local (Motherwell), the lager drink was local (Crooked Run), and so was the cider drink (Lost Boy). I love this weird little city.

Also hung out with a Danny boy and several next door neighbors. I assume I will be knocked down in a few minutes and get back up again in about ten hours if the sleeping in fates allow.

Let me congratulate infosec for really stepping up, this cyber awareness month has been going gangbusters! Let's not let up now, there's still a week of awareness to deliver!

I really appreciate that this makes me try to remember names better. And the last one I knew the neighborhood and was very aware of its existence for reasons (you’ll see) but didn’t have a clue where.

A bunch of physical health stuff too. There’s a chicken pox vaccine now. HIV exploded and now is treatable in my lifetime.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Mandatory seat belts, car seats, and unleaded gas. Handling food allergies, neurodivergence, and all the other “we didn’t have so many X in my day” things. Yeah they either died or self medicated poorly. Access to mental health resources. Vegetarian food options.

Honestly this but with the grocery store not helping either. My dad shipped basic ingredients for Mexican food from south Phoenix to Michigan so I could cook it in college. “Ethnic” food was Old El Paso and La Choy if you weren’t in a city.

a 25 year old could not comprehend how bad the dining options were in the median American town in 1996

Even overlapping early social media … this. Livejournal, the White Wolf TTRPG forums and the Usenet on the same topic, a certain local news site comments…. Still occasionally bump into people from back then on new sites and it’s joyful. The attempt at capitalizing on it is what sucks.

This post is unavailable.

Hell, I know one person from commenting on DCist who it turns out also commented on alt.games.whitewolf. Came up in conversation years later. Several people on here I know because of a local tech Slack that used to feel forum-like and then followed on Twitter and beyond.

The Midwesterner in me is drooling. The fact that the Midwestern part of my childhood was in Michigan also makes me hate it on principal because Wisconsin. The fact that my local stadiums don’t have cheese curd stands… rage inducing.

after statehood we'll have to rename the airport after someone who isn't awful and while duke ellington is probably the most sensible pick i think "fugazi international" really rolls off the tongue

Hear me out… we find all hundred or so variations of that one person who is in the XKCD comic keeping modern tech running and give them a different hobby. It has to be easier than making that hobby less exploitable, taxing billionaires, or anything else systemic and gives us time to reset.

If I had a nickel for every time I was aware of a bit involving explosive gourds, I’d only have ten cents but it’s weird that it happened twice. (Other time was a throwaway joke on the before it’s time sitcom “Better Off Ted”)

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
