The failed effort to kill Christa Pike in Tennessee has placed a harsh spotlight on the practice of capital punishment in the U.S., as well as the regularity with which those executions go awry.

The execution team worked for an hour to administer the lethal drugs, said Pike’s attorney, who counted at least seven needles in her left arm. Christa Pike is in critical condition after Tennessee's failed execution attempt.
